"When the bankers cost the country billions and almost sent us bankrupt, the rest of the country paid for something that happened mostly in London."
According to some sources the bailouts of the Royal Bank of Scotland and HBOS, obviously both Scottish banks, cost the Treasury something like ?67 billion. Some say it was vastly more, there are those who claim the bank bailouts cost the Treasury about ?1 trillion. If this had happened post-independence, and post FULL independence, none of this 'sharing the pound, the Bank of England calls the shots' thing that Salmond wants, but TOTALLY independent, then Scotland could not have afforded those huge bailouts. So London, England came to the rescue.
Alex Salmond even played a part in the collapse of one of those banks, I cant remember which one (one of them anyway) when he wrote a letter to its CEO endorsing the purchase it was planning to make of a foreign, toxic bank. Having bought this other bank out the bank here collapsed. I would like to see Alex Salmond reminded of this in one of these debates.

Not sure if you're being sarky but fags don't ignite petrol vapours.

Max et al.
It seems to me that the SNP line on this is insane. As far as I understand it, their argument is now that if the vote is for yes, it will be the Scottish democratic mandate to keep the pound and the Bank of England as the lender of last resort and the remainder of the British government should not reject the sovereign will of the Scottish people.
And if Scotland don't get what they want they will default on their share of the debt. That should go down really, really well with the money markets that Salmond will need to fund his spending plans.
Jeez, Mr. Salmond, it is called INDEPENDENCE!

Much like my unsubtle Glasgow born work colleague who states that there are
a lot of stupid people in Scotland who will vote for Salmond because they
believe his mind numbing drivel. Personally I would like to see the Yes votes
win and then all the Jock MPs in Westminster can clear off north of the border
and pick up the pieces of a shattered country that Salmond will have created.
Of course this is nothing new. I remember in 1975 a Scots Guards Lance Sergeant stating quite
vehemently when he was "in drink" that Scotland could go it alone with the
North Sea oil. Conveniently forgetting that they do not own all of the North Sea.

Salmond keeps the pound.
Wtf? Strange sort of independence
November 1999: "The pound is a millstone round Scotland's neck".
January 2009: "We're in sterling and sterling is sinking like a stone".
August 2014: "It's our pound and we're keeping it".
What next week?

As a Scotsman I hope for independence, not a fan of Alex Salmond or the SNP but independence is something every country deserves despite any currency debate.it will be a close call on 18 Sept.

I can't get out of my head the following imaginary conversation after Salmond's win in 2010.
Salmond "Jessus, now we are going to have to have an independence vote, Nicola"
Nicola Sturgeon, "Yeh, who would have thought it. What are we going to do now?"
Salmond "Dunno. I've spent donkey's years blaming the Westminster government for everything, I haven't got any plans. I know, let's keep everything just the same if we win an independence vote."
Sturgeon "Great idea, Alex."
Salmond "Lets keep the pound and the currency union with the Bank of England"
Sturgeon "But that means we will have to keep to the spending plans Westminster insists on and they will set our interest rates"
Salmond. "Never mind, we can carry on blaming Westminster for everything"
Sturgeon "What about the EU"
Salmond "Oh we will just lie to the Scottish people and tell them we have taken advice that we will get in automatically straightaway. No worries."
Sturgeon "And we will keep the Queen, the Commonwealth, COronation Street and sell loads of Tunnocks Teacakes".
Salmond "Great idea, Nicola. Life will be so good and different, once we become independent"
Sturgeon "Err, will it?"
To be continued

Re: Salmond v. Darling
Scotland will not be that independent if they are members of the EU and have their currency controlled by rUK.
In fact, Scotland will have less influence in Europe as a small nation of 5 million than if it was inside a UK that who's economy will pretty soon be 2nd only to Germany within the EU.
Having said that, you're right. If Scots want independence then they have every right to get it. Whether it's a good thing is another matter.
