Salmond v. Darling

Post by David Johnson »

Well I listened to part of the debate over Scottish Independence. Yes, I am sad.

What I find gobsmacking is that 2 years into the debate on independence when Darling asked what his Plan B would be on the currency, Salmond could do nothing else but come up with the hoary chestnut that a currency union with the UK in which Scotland used the pound sterling and the Bank of ENGLAND was the lender of last resort, setting interest rates was in the best interests of Scotland and the UK etc. etc. The same line he has been peddling for years now even though the main parties have discounted it.

"OKay Alex so what if the Tories, the Lib Dems, the Labour party are being honest when they say there is no chance of a currency union" what would you do as your Plan B? Silence!

Even the audience that came from a cross section of Yes, No and Undecideds were sneering and laughing at him.

Salmond needs to change his line and quick.

My unsubtle Glasgow born mother describes him as a Gallous and a dangerous idiot. I still think they will get battered in the poll and after that I expect McSalmond to resign and take over a shortbread factory in Auchenshuggle and become the richest man in the world.

Obviously is in only Scots who can vote in this in 6 weeks time so it was only necessary to show the debate north of the border, but many people down this end of the island would have liked to have watched it - I'm surprised therefore that they didn't show it on TV here. It's bound to be available online somewhere so I might try and seek it out.

I am CERTAIN the independence lot will lose in September, there is not enough support for the 'out' campaign and also I think it would be a very scary step into the unknown for the Scots to leave - I am sure a lot of people who might want rid of Westminster are aware of that and many of them, along with people who want to stay whatever, will vote to stay too. There is a front page feature in the London Evening Standard today about a letter signed by many celebs who want Scotland to stay. I can't see them leaving. Salmond will have egg on his face on 19 September.

It was on STV.com or would have been had they not had technical problems. It was shown today on BBC Parliament and no doubt will be again...

They are due to have another debate in a few weeks time which, I think, will be on the BBC.

Salmond was demolished. Darling ought to be careful though. People will always side with David vs Goliath and it won't take much for it to look like Darling is the one representing 'the English' or 'Westminster' and bullying Salmond.

How about us English having a referendum on wether we would wish to stay in the UK, London alone probably creates more wealth than the whole of Scotland so why should we keep sharing it with them..

London is also the first to benefit when the economy picks up. Most of the big parties' policies are London-centric, so swings and roundabouts there. Remember that in the past, when our economy was largely centred around making things and industry, the north and Scotland paid their way. It's not Scotland's fault that government after government over the last 30 years have encouraged the creation of a the London we see today. When the bankers cost the country billions and almost sent us bankrupt, the rest of the country paid for something that happened mostly in London. Again.....swings and roundabouts.

As for us English having a referendum.....why not? It's not like the politicians are denying it us though. We've just not demanded it enough.

That's because London creates the wealth, the rest of the world was discovered from London it's still the greatest city on this earth.

And do you want to know a secret.. why do these piers keep going up in smoke in the south of England, it's because of the offshore oil that just keeps oozing out of the ground and every time someone drops a fag end it ignites with the oil vapouirs that are just everywhere in the south east.
