As possibly the only person on this thread who has to get tested every month, one of the questions they ask in every UK NHS clinic I've ever attended is this:

"Have you during the last 3 months had sex with a person from the African sub continent?" And sometimes they add, "and South East Asia".

Your answer is noted and no comment is made. They also ask if you have used intravenous drugs and if you have knowingly had sex with someone who is HIV positive.

So I presume they consider all these activities put you at a higher level of risk than normal.

"You would agree though surely that HIV is in general a much bigger health problem in sub-saharan Africa than the UK, and that overall infection numbers there are far higher, no?"

I would agree with what you are saying here. The main reason I posted the link was that I think it is important to have a few facts rather than to depend on the same old prejudices. For example, Argie states about Gentleman's reference to black Africans "Very true, and they are culturally against any form of contraception which massively increases the chance of infection."

If that were true you would expect there to be an increase in black African HIV diagnoses in the UK but instead there has been a marked decline as shown by the graph. What the graphs appear to show is that there is a lot of complacency among white people in the UK which seems to have resulted in a stubborn failure to reduce the infection rates amongst people with white ethnicity.

The bottom line is that people generally don't have sex based on an analysis of ethnic or cultural risk factors and instead they should concentrate on applying the usual safe sex rules, if they don't want to play Russian roulette with their long-term health.

The key word you used is diagnoses which means that somebody went to be tested or went to receive treatment for a sti.

And please don't play the race card when referring to my original reply if I was going down that line surely nigger or wog would have been a better choice than african as I would be getting more proverbial bang for my buck.

Agreed. However, the reduction in black African HIV cases in the UK shown in the graph for the period 2004 to 2011 would suggest that either:

There has been a drop off in black African HIV cases in the UK generally

or

Black Africans decided from 2004 onwards not to get tested in the same numbers.

Obviously this is just a supposition because there could be many, many reasons for drops in diagnoses.

"And please don't play the race card when referring to my original reply"

I wasn't. I refer to Argie's comment not yours.

Why, because a fact was stated?
