Its because, with the exception of Martin O'Niell, they are 'Armchair Managers' apart from Mark Lawrenson who is a failed manager.
They like the security of commentating as its stress-free and no pressure, well, unless your'e a knob commentator like Ian Wright or a prat commentator like Peter Schmechael who have both been 'released' by the beeb these past 18 months.
Hanson can't cut it as a manager, and he knows it, and dare I say it, neither has Shearer..........I think he'll consign himself as a analysist/commentator as it won't tarnish his reputation as a player.
And Im willing to bet decent money they are ALL shit as PlayStation Football Manager as well

I think it said it all about Shearer when he was been talked of as a possible manager at Blackburn, he turned the opportunity down to concentrate on 'his other commitments' , in other words 'I am looking after my nice, well paid job at the BBC, who needs the aggro & hassle of football management?

Always watch live sports with no commentary makes for a far better spectacle

One things for certain none of the Football commentators could be as bad as the worst commentator that ever spoke,Geoff Boycott(cricket)

Both BBC and ITV's commentary are dreadful.
Both try to fit in as many references to England or premiership players as possible. Clive T almost burst into song when talking about Torres before hand last night.
Commentate on the game. Was so glad portugal went out so the 'ronaldo road show' slowed down.
Whats the bets if he leaves Utd for madrid english commentators will have a new 'greatest player in the world' playing in the premiership by september.

To be fair, I'd say 70% of the audience were English and so references to England-based players is pretty much a given I'm afraid.

I used to like Barry Davies commentary. Remember Gerald Sinstadt (probably spelt that wrong!) ? He always used to get players mixed up. I remember watching ITV's sunday highlights show back in the 70s, the big match or whatever, and he kept getting Mike Doyle mixed up with Tommy Booth and Colin Bell mixed up with Wyn Davies!! It was like someone who has no idea about football doing the commentary. Quite funny actually as when Doyle scored he shouts out Booth and then goes no it was - Doyle! Then he calls him Tommy Doyle!!! Top comedy moment!

Motty's last game this evening. His commentary has gone stale lately. But he'll always be remembered for his trivial stats and his reference to that German player that scored against England at Euro 96.(Kuntz) !laugh!

Enjoy your retirement Motty !thumbsup!
