60s - Beatles, Stones, Who, Kinks, Small Faces, Cream.

70s- Sabbath, Zeppelin, Floyd, Free, Hawkwind, Pistols, Jam, Clash, Motorhead.

80s - Joy Division (79/80), New Order, Smiths, Jesus & Mary Chain, The Cult, The Fall, Stone Roses & Happy Mondays (88-90),

90s- Primal Scream, Curve, Prodigy, Radiohead, Oasis, PJ Harvey (if can count as a band), Verve.

00s- can't think!

I like all the above with equal measure so its difficult to choose the all time one for me.

Best US bands then? - Nirvana, Pixies, Sonic Youth, Mudhoney, Soundgarden, Dinosaur Jr for starters! !bow!

To add a couple more influential bands lets look at Diamond Head and The Nice. Diamond Head were at the forefront of NWOBH and the Nice turned into ELP, who were superb musicians, if a trifle OTT..!

To chuck in a few more.......Moody Blues, Tears for Fears, Pet Shop Boys, Judas Priest, Jeff Beck with Rod Stewart, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Dave Clark 5 (Sorry I jest!!!!).

Re: best british band--Zep

I always thought of the Clash as an 80s band. Rolling Stone mag voted "London Calling" the bst album of the 1980s.

Of that impressive list...Led Zeppelin is the best. The Beatles were the most influential...but Zep was the best.

Of the American bands...add Metallica, Van Halen, Lynrd Skynrd, Alice in Chains, The Doors, others, too. Please don't mention Kiss.

pet shop boys definitely a seminal 80s band. made some of the best 'pop' records ever! in that respect, erasure were also a great band. in fact the 80s was full of other great british bands from duran duran to depeche mode.

Personally, I still rate The Beatles the best British group ever had. Although I am not a British citizen myself. I am from one of the British Commonwealth country from South East Asia. The Beatles songs and music still evergreen to this very day.

Can somebody confirm someone has mentioned Erasure and Duran Duran? fuck me ragged, we said best not campest!

Forgot to add in The Eurythmics, not my cup of tea but well written and produced.

Has anyone mentioned T-Rex, Slade, ELO and Alex Harvey?
