A great film, but perhaps best seen as part of a body of work by its maker, Paul Thomas Anderson, arguably the best American director we have at the moment. Damaged personalities and power clashes a recurring theme.

Probably not the first, but the first to spring to mind was Harry Nilsonn's 'Without You', a song which played on the radio on a seemingly permanent loop back in the 70s.
