Do such things actually exist (ie, shooting on behalf of a private collector/for the Korean market etc?) Without meaning to be naive, is this a bona fide area of photography or just a wink-wink don't tell the wife style little white lie for personal gratifiation/masturbation photography.
To be clear, I have nothing against personal gratification photography, it's just I like to call a spade a spade and all that.

Re: Private Collections/International Markets
Private collectors exist, but not in the quantities people claim to be shooting for.
So yes, people use it to disguise their own embarrassment at what they're shooting. As long as the work is acceptable and safe, it shouldn't be too hard to keep up the pretence and take their money!

Re: Private Collections/International Markets
Private collectors certainly do exist. They can provide a meaningful income stream... the serious ones do tend to know what they are talking about, both in terms of what they want you to shoot and what the reasonable market cost for what they want is.
Can?t say I?ve had any dealings with Korea but I have with Germany, Canada and the USA.
There?s an often ignored plus for the producer of the desired content, this tends to be quite ?specific? stuff, predominantly fetish content, these collectors know their subject and you can learn a great deal from them in relation to their particular fetish, which is useful if you go on to shoot the genre elsewhere.
I should say this about shooting for a private collector... it can be a bit like reading a book, then watching the film dramatisation of the same book... sometimes the film doesn?t live up to the book. So, sometimes the end video you come up with, just doesn?t live up to the collectors expectations in relation to the details, instructions, descriptions, etc, given at the outset by them. Then there can be a problem or two to overcome.
You have to get the pricing right. You have to get as much detail as possible on what is actually wanted (I mean you really do need A LOT of detail). The golden rule: get the money up front!

ADDENDUM:
Just re-read your original post and my reply... which is really more geared towards a producer supplying a custom video to a private collector.
On reflection your post seems to be more about modelling for a ?private collector?.
To be quite frank, my answer to that is pretty straightforward... if you?re modelling within your levels and getting paid an acceptable rate, who gives a shit? Blunt, but honest.

Yeah, I was meaning "producers" who shoot on behalf of a private collector.
I guess in conclusion , such people do exist, but there are also a lot of phoneys out there who use it as an excuse/hoodwink when in fact the (typically low quality images) are just for their own wanking collection.
I have no objection to personal masturbation collections and "guys with cams", I'd just prefere honesty, or at least not dishonesty.
I'd say about half the art nude shoots I've done have been for "personal use" - I've never had an issue with that. Obviously they didn't tell me directly, and I don't want to hear it directly, but I question the need for people to tell outright lies.

As long as it's a harmless lie (about who exactly is going to be wanking over the results), better to just play along and take their money rather than scare them off and have they use someone else.

I have a few private clients I regularly shoot for.

Re: Private Collections/International Markets
1. Private collectors exist. Lets say that a guy in Japan sees a UK or US model that he likes .Even if he's an amateur photographer himself, he would need to either fly to her or to fly her to him to shoot her himself. So instead he could either buy custom sets from the model directly if that's a possibility or book a local photographer to shoot with her. That happens.
2. Maybe the guy is local, but he's not a good photographer, or he's shy, or he doesn't want to meet the model. Then that guy can do the same as the guy in Japan.
3. Then there are some photographers who are shooting content for their own private collection, but don't want to admit that to the model. And the model may very prefer not to think about the fact that they guy she spent hours shooting with is going to starting wanking off to her after she leaves, so she chooses to believe that he shot for a private collector.
While 1 and 2 exist, you'd probably make money by always betting on 3.

Ah, cool, so it's kind like the firing squad, where one gun is loaded with blanks; Some models feel better being told that it's a "private collector commission," which while unlikley *might* be true and they'll never know for sure.

Re: Private Collections/International Markets
Im in agreement with the other posts but i have also regularly heard "private/international" said where the tog thinks the model might not be keen on the levels if she thought it was to be openly published.
Saying private/international therefore puts some models more at ease with certain levels.
Id be interested to know if models are asked to provide ID proof for these shoots
