Camera Advice

Hi All,

I'm looking into starting to shoot my own content, initially for non-publication and was wondering what camera anyone would recommend for good quality stills and video bearing in mind my budget would be about ?400?

There seems so many to choose from so any advice would be massively appreciated from others with experience.

Personally I would suggest going for a DSLR.

See what Canon and Nikon offer within your budget.

For stills I'd definitely recommend a DSLR but video recording can be tricky as they're not as user friendly as a dedicated camcorder. With that said, you can get really good quality video using them with practice.

You can look at a used CSC as well. The quality's pretty good as well and the video recording is perhaps more user friendly than with most DSLRs.

?400 for both... eek :/ Not really sure... our video camera cost ?4000 on it's own... If you can get something that does both for ?400 your doing well...

What about lighting ? Or are you really going for the super amateur stuff ?

You have two options, either the Nikon D3100 or D5100 both offer full HD

Check out uk prices as they vary a lot, I can't comment on Canon as I am a Nikon man myself and work with both D90 and D7000 of which I would think are both outside your budget, plus the not full HD either unlike the 3100 and 5100

Horses for courses at the end of the day and it's upto you really but I have never had any problems with Nikon in all the 30 years I've used them.

Personally, I agree with puretotty... 1st, dslr only take so much film & can over heat when filming for a while...

But to get you started, a decent stills camera for the future & for now, to get some hd vid

Hey mate... it looks like there is some great stuff out there within your budget... like tj suggested... the 5001 or was it 501 looks a nice piece of kit for the $$$...

I am a Canon man myself... but sure there is something in the price range similar to the Nikon options... good luck

Just a thought, but if your camera budget is only 400, what's your girls budget?

If you plan to find new ones and talk the clothes off them, great, but if you plan to hire them then it won't be long before you have paid many times your camera budget in model fees.

I'd think carefully about the outer edges of your shoots - low light? Fussy about sound? Getting arty? Make sure your camera can cope because that's when the limitations of a cheaper one will show.

If you decide you really need a 1000 one, save up. Better a 1000 that lasts many years than 400 that leaves you frustrated.
