Not sure about that but he believed he had mystical powers. He certainly held a strange power over his "family" of hippie misfits and had no difficulty persuading them to follow him in a murder spree. His philosophy IRRC had something to do with the Beatles lyric "helter skelter" and the "familys" mission was to kill as many rich "pigs" as they could. They killed actress Sharon Tate (wife of Roman Polanski) who was pregnant at the time. I will spare you the nasty details. Horrid business.
