Video editing software

Post by Wildfowler »

Hi everybody

I am going to get some new video editing software as I am fed up of having my video footage looking crap after editing and exporting as a WMA file and the files being massive

I am using Adobe premiere elements 3.0 at the mo but I cant get final cut pro cos I am not using a Mac

I am looking at getting Sony Vegas pro 9.0 which is around ?400

Does anybody use it and is it worth that much?

I have downloaded the trial and it look great and the footage is exporting great and the files are much smaller but I would like to make sure it is as good as it seems before I lay out that much cash

Are you making sure the encoding options for WMV are set correctly or to your tastes? Higher complexity options will give you better quality output at the same bitrate with the tradeoff being encoding time.

Hi Twingo

I tested the footage lots of different ways when exporting and messed around with the setting for days on end with no success

I even had the PC in for a check to make sure it was not a hardware problem

After talking with Peter Kay of he though it was a encoding problem too so I downloaded windows Expression Encoder 4.0 and exported the raw footage on the same setting as I was using on adobe and the results was outstanding and the files where very small

So it has to be the software

Despite having 10 years experience as a professional editor using a number of pro setups I was recently baffled trying to use Sony Vegas 9 it seemed much more difficult than anything else I had ever used and 400 quid!

I use Vegas, though when I was looking around everyone serious seemed to use Final Cut Pro on Macs. (But buying the Mac ansd the software would have been around 2K, so 400 for Vegas seemed fair enough..)

Vegas is powerful, fast, but does seem to be a bugger to learn, at least for someone - me - without an editing background.

That said, I find that googling problems usually gets me an answer. Once I have learned what the actual question is...grrr

Vegas TIP - to avoid dropped frames, capture to an internal hard drive, then export to the external file store...

Try Ulead Studio its cheap and user friendly. I have tried them all but technical quality depends on the original footage.

I have 27 days of the free trial of vegas left so I will make a call on that after then

what I will do is get some video footage exported and do links form vegas so you can tell me if you think the foot quality is worth the money

It's programs running in the background on your PC, using system resources that are causing your dropped frames (an insufficient PC can obviously cause this too).

A program like 'EndIt All' should help you with this problem. You can download it from http://enditall.en.softonic.com
