help Min DV or HD
Re: help Min DV or HD
Hi Brian. The main consideration is that it's not only the camera you have to upgrade - it's also your editing computer. HD needs a LOT of processing power and memory. There was a thread on here about it recently.

I would also say it depends on what the intention is with the finished product? i.e. is it for DVD purposes, website or peronal use only etc.

Giving users HD files means giving them HUGE files. Mucho expensive bandwidth costs....
And then, most users won't see it in full quality because of their local set up...
Film and edit in HD if you like, worst case scenario is you end up with a big library of material for when users can benefit, but maybe not push the boat out to do so. Yet.

My advice would be to upgrade to a HD camcorder. The extra cost is small compared to the cost, time and effort that goes into a shoot.
I'm not sure I agree with rgb - you don't necessarily have to upgrade your editing computer. You can still output standard definition from the camcorder and edit as normal. But, you will have the HD raw footage archived on the camera tapes. As public expectations change (as I'm sure they will) it would be possible at some time in the future, when you've upgraded your computer, to re-capture the HD footage (using the same batch list) and re-release in High Definition.
As more and more people connect their PC's to their plasma TV's, I'm sure HD content will have the edge.

Sony are fetching out a ?900 HD camera which records on Mini DV ..you get 40 mins HD on a 63 min tape, it also records & plays DV.
As we use Mini DV we will get this after Xmas but to be honest still carry on shooting in DV until Broadband speeds in the UK are up to the same as the US & Japan.
