I was rappin? with modelling agency proprietor ?Marcus Allen? the other day and he was bemoaning the state of the UK glamour/porno industry. Apparently, he just can?t get any decent girls anymore, they?re just not coming through the door like they used to 10 years ago. He said ?I?ve had it up to here. He reckons the problem is that all the best girls now go straight into pole dancing, or escorting, where they can easily earn ?1000.00 a week. They look at video work and think ?I?m not doing that for just ?300.00 a session and get all the agro and grief from friends, family and acquaintances, not to mention the poxy Tabloid Press.? Escorting and pole dancing is low profile, so only their colleagues will know what their job is. Marcus says that nowadays he?s just left with the rejects - girls who don?t have the looks or intellectual capacity to make it in escorting and pole dancing. The kind of girls who would not be capable of holding even the lowliest of straight jobs down! These are sad times indeed for British adult video.

But there is a glimmer of hope. I inquired if this unfortunate trend could be reversed and Marcus reckoned that indeed it could. It was all a question of dough. Video producers just need to make it worth girls while to get into video - maybe offer US rates of pay, or even a little more. It would be worth it for some classy English babes and quality product. Of course these increased costs would mean that price cutting and discounts would be off the agenda. But neither would there be price rises. It would just mean that punter would have to pay what they would expect to pay for a ?proper? (not bootlegged) Private video. I just wondered what video consumers think of that?

i would guess that there is simply more competition for girls all round. maybe - and this is a long shot - when they turn up to see marcus for work, they're are less than enthralled at the prospect of this particular crumbly dropping bits all over them and so they simply find a more acceptable not to say remunerative alternative, of which there are many.

there are probably more good looking, intelligent women drawn to the various strands of the adult entertainment business than at any time but they also have infinitely more avenues of opportunity than were available in the past.

more pay sounds like a good start, for enhancing prospects of obtaining 'classier' models but the economics will always be against you due to existing problems caused by consraints imposed by the state upon distribution.

until sending tapes by mail order is legalised and sex shops aren't held to ransome by local authorities over licenses; and until you can casually hire r18 tapes from your local video store or watch them uncut on your encrypted satellite channel, there will remain vast opportunities for pirates to fill the gap in making your product more accessible to members of the public.

and you will continue to find it hard to make the sort of living you feel you should, because the popularity of your merchandise isn't reflected in legitimate sales. consequently, it will remain as hard as ever to get the girls you want, interested in working for what you can actually afford!

I have to agree with claymore and Marcus Allen - at least up to a point. As I pointed out here before, I think it is disgraceful how little the girls get paid in Porn. They should be on a retainer + generous royalties. Their earnings should be far in excess of Escort girls -?1,000 per week? Easy @ up to ?300 per hour. I see some of the Video stars are engaged in escorting as well. It would be interesting to hear their viewpoint. What about it?

From compiling this database it's my impression that there are just as many, or more, really good-looking girls involved as there were ten years ago, but that there may be more of the less-good looking girls than there were then, if only because the industry is bigger. Having recently watched Phone Sex Girls International, released in 1988, the idea that there was some sort of golden era where all British girls involved in porn had supermodel/filmstar looks seems absurd. I think that to some extent the past may be being viewed through rose-tinted glasses here - or beer-stained bottoms of glasses .
