Age old Guitar Hero poll

Post by Arginald Valleywater »

The electric guitar is one of the greatest inventions known to man. My axe wielding friend, who plays semi professionally was annoyed at a recent list, that as he put, was written by someone who doesn't know a guitar from a bus shelter!! So BGAFD'ers who are you fave guitar gods or unsung heroes (no pun intended)???

I'll start the ball rolling from a mainstream angle
1950s Les Paul for technical advancements
1960s Jeff Beck for pure virtuoso playing and going his own instead of the supergroup route. Hendrix for making guitar playing sexy.
1970s Ritchie Blackmore, Tony Iommi, Robin Trower, Dave Gilmour, Tom Scholz, Steve Morse, Billy Gibbons,
1980s Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Stevens, Kirk Hamnet, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Stevie Ray Vaughan
1990s was not that great a time as Indie and other forms tended to avoid virtuoso playing
2000s Bonamassa, Robben Ford,

Over to you gentlemen........

Satch, Vai, Jason Becker, Tony McAlpine, Marty Freidman, Slash

Malmsteen, Eddie Van Halen, Brian May, Hendrix, Townsend

Jimmy Page, Gary Moore, Randy Rhoads, sure there's more I've forgot.

A special mention to Satchel, I know Steel Panther are a comedy rock band, but they all have serious musical ability, if you follow the youtube circuit on them, there's nothing that seems to scare him, he can go toe to toe with EVH.

We have need of you again, great king.

Are we judging it on how many notes one can play accurately in any given minute or actually making music using an electrical guitar?

Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page for instance.......one's a guitarist who plays music and the other a musician who plays guitar.

I am more impressed by feel and tone. Some players are technically awesome but bland, someone like Angus Young is a bit rough and ready but is amazing live. I didn't include any Jazz / Funk players as their music is only fit for stunning pigs (as Mr R C Nesbitt of Glasgow once said...).
Of the many players I have seen live the best were Joe Bonamassa, Ritchie Blackmore and Kirk Hammnet. Worst so called guitar hero was the late Gary Moore, so far up his own posterior and never acknowledged the crowd.

A tad harsh on funk in my opinion, therefore allow me to be a lone voice in the wilderness and nominate the late, great Eddie Hazel...

Such a wide and emotive topic. It's like being back in the playground at school. Lol.

I saw Gary Moore in Leeds and he didn't say a word but boy could he play.

I like those guitarists who just seem to lose themselves in the music when they play live. Satriani, Vai and Petrucci - all awesome. But live I would have to say Neil Young electric is my all time fave.

And to add some fun, what about twin guitars? The two guys in Avenged, Lizzy, Scorps and Metallica? That might throw up some interesting threads.

Then there's acoustic - let's start that one with Rodrigo y Gabriela. Most excellent live. As bizarrely were the Tenacious D!!!!
