The Reader

Post by David Johnson »

its been a good week for watching DVDs.

This one has Kate Winslet and Ralph Fiennes in it and an actor playing Fiennes' character as a young man.

Set in Germany it is about boyhood dreams, love, sex, truth and reconciliation with the thread of the effects of the Nazi concentration camps as central to the outcome.

Wnslet is stunning.

There ain't no CGI. There ain't no fight scenes. There IS a compelling story about not being able to escape your past and the overwhelming effects of loss.

So if you are into a good story and excellent acting, this is worth a watch.

Had you hit the Cinzano prior to posting on t'other forum David? !hic!

Agreed, good film. Proper story led film, as you say, none of the normal hollywood bollocks.
I saw it at das Kino 4 years ago but I may give it another watch, now it's been a while.

Saw it on the big screen when it was out years ago. Came away thinking the same as you. Great film. In fact I cant think of a film with Kate Winslet in it that was ever bad.

Thoroughly enjoyed the recent Mildred Pierce too

This is rather an old movie, David, clearly you do not waste your hard-
earned cash on trips to the Cinema often, or renting dvds.....but you
are quite right, it is a fascinating film.
For those who lust after Kate Winslet, her most scorching performance
has to be in the neglected film, "Romance and Cigarettes", set in New
Jersey, in which she plays a lass from Yorkshire who works in a sex shop
with lines like "Make me juicy with that big thick cock of yers" and "I just
love shagging old blokes...cos` you`re all so dirty." Her performance is a
revelation.
