Doesn't it make you proud to be British?
Diamond Dave shows true British bulldog spirit by going to Brussels and giving Jonny Foreigner a good thumping. After all, they deserve it. Isn't it all their fault that Diamond Dave and Boy George haven't made the brilliant success with the British economy as expected?
So what has Diamond Dave achieved? Why did he block changes to the Lisbon Treaty by vetoing it?
Diamond Dave sought a separate legally-binding "protocol" to protect the City of London from more EU financial regulations. He didn't get one.
So presumably he stopped these changes happening?
Err, no. The eurozone countries agreed to do exactly the same thing but by an "intergovernmental accord" instead of changes to the Lisbon treaty.
Ok, so what else did Diamond Dave try to achieve?
Diamond Dave wanted an agreement that the European Banking Authority would remain in London, protection for US financial institutions based in London that do not trade with the rest of Europe, and an agreement that any changes - including a financial transactions tax - would require the unanimous backing of all EU members. He didn't get any of those either.
Ok, but Diamond Dave is a bright guy so lots of other countries must have agreed with him?
Err no, the UK was the only country that spoke out against the amendment so it is 26-1 so to speak.
Yes but those non-Eurozone countries who did say yes will have to send off their budgets to Brussels wont they?
Err no. It is just for the eurozone countries. The non-Eurozone countries won't be affected.
Diamond Dave working to protect British interests. I can hear his bark from here.
Cheers

Diamond Dave thumps Jonny Foreigner
Re: Diamond Dave thumps Jonny Foreigner
I suspect he's just trying to stop us being 'ruled' by a French Pygmy, and a German Dictator. Simple really, for your information three other countries have still to agree to the Pygmy and Dictators wishes, the Dictator has also been triyng to do what CMD did for years.

So precisely what has Diamond Dave achieved by "blocking" the measures discussed in Brussels?

Diamond Dave is the only one who vetoed it. The three other countries you refer to, spoke in favour of the measure but need to refer it to their parliaments.
Cheers

Big deal, who care's anyway, you certainly won't get a say in it, so why worry? you won't get a say in becoming a fully paid up member of Europe including the Euro as a currency, and you won't get a say in it not happening either, put simply, your view won't count no matter what party you support. The pygmy and the Dictator will have decided your future for you. Welcome to the future of Democracy, As for me, I don't really need a say in it, I can live anywhere I want, doesn't stop me having my thought's though. I might move to Italy next year for a while, I like my corruption hardcore.

History Repeating Itself
Its a bit like in reverse except this time GB is left out whilst Germany is calling the shots, well we all know what happened eventually WW2, so it looks like fortress Britain again, unless the Jocks opt for independance but they could feel a bit isolated if England pulls out of the EU and they stay in !wink!

Re: History Repeating Itself
I wish to God - as a Brit who loves my old country but is based in Europe
- that GB would stop assing around and just pull out of the EEC. Why ?
Because when you join a club - any club - you agree to abide by the rules
and if its the kind of club that needs your input and support you give it
without reserve. Personally I cannot blame the other 27 members of this
club being pissed off with Britain. All it seems to do is join in where it likes
and be difficult with things it does not like.
If Britain had properly embraced the challenge of EEC membership it could
have by now been top dog (not the Germans) and certainly acted as a
sensible influence on the wilder ideas of EEC policy. But Britain`s bolshey
attitude has seen her sidelined more and more for years.
Clearly Cameron`s vote has set GB on a course to leave. If he personally
wants to stay in (and I think David does, though he has lots of euro-
sceptics sround him) he is wasting his time because from now on it is clear
GB will be treated as a joke, barely members, who arse around.
Lets be clear: the eurozone is in a mess; like all things, this financial stew
will sooner or later stop boiling. When it does I have no doubt the french,
germans and several others will take their revenge.

Exactly. I can see what Diamond Dave didnt want to happen, actually happening i.e. a load of EU regulations of the banking industry hitting the City of London.
Shot himself in the foot, I suspect.

I'm sure if Cameron & Co had come back to the UK and announced they'd agreed to every single measure that our EU partners had proposed without a single murmur and in fact had laid garlands of flowers around the necks of every EU head of state, our David J would have declared, "Spineless Dodgy Dave creeps and crawls yet again to EU dictators!" and the post would have that kind of whimsical, "Oh, if only New Labour were still in charge, they'd know what to do!" sort of tone.
This is why 99% of arguments or observations posted by political fanatics are basically worthless, because they simply cannot see outside the confines of their own tiny, closed, myopic ideology. It doesn't matter if they support New Labour, The Tories, BNP, UKIP or anyone else they all speak total bollocks just from different viewpoints and this is why nothing is ever solved.
This is also why, I believe something like 40% of the public STILL believe it was New Labour's reckless squandering and the banks that have landed us in this shit. Whether they are right of wrong doesn't matter, what does matter is that the public simply DON'T believe anything politicians and their party faithful say anymore.
The days of spin are over! Some on here should take note.
