Andrew McAuley

Post by hotmandy69 »

Did anyone else watch the program last night about this guy? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_McAuley I thought it was so, so sad; it really moved me. Just wondered what others thought? Pretty epic, though feel really bad for his wife and kid x

I did, and to know he was to die as he left his family on the shore was truly sad.

"National Geographic Channel's "Solo: Lost at Sea" is a tale of defiance in the face of responsibility and common sense. It is a risk-taking adventure where the odds are so totally stacked against McAuley, it is painful to watch."

I only caught the very end of it where his wife was adamant that he'd 'made it' ie done the crossing and achieved what he'd set out to do. I'll keep an eye out for it in the schedule if it comes around again.

Here's a similar thing from some years previously:

There is a film of this too called 'Deep Water' which has been on tv. It's well worth a watch.

Anyone attempting to kayak 1600km across the Tasman Sea actually deserves whatever happens to him - sounds kike a bit of a nutter. If people do stupid things it's hardly surprising some of them die.

McAuley sounds like a total fuckwit on a grand scale.

At least Donald Crowhurst was looking after his family and was beaten and destroyed by changes.

Dunno, there was a point at which Crowhurst's family was on benefit so it was quite precarious for them financially.

The saddest part with Andrew was that he had near as dammit made it. He could see land! I dont really understand what happend, i dont really think we will ever know, how he made it through deep sea storms at which he was expected to die, but fell at the final hurdle. I do feel so bad for his wife and kids though x
