Hi chubbs, first plan of action is doing a speedtest, so go here:

and run the test (with nothing downloading or any other windows open) then report back what results you get, also let us know what ISP you are with and what deal you signed up to (perhaps they are restricting your bandwith during peak times) ... also what modem you are connecting to the internet with and I/we should be able to help a bit.
PEOPLE think Stephen Hawking is so clever, but when you ask him a question and he is typing in the answer on his little screen, how do we know he isn't just looking up the answer on the Internet?

needle in a haystack time

connection definitely for starters
check your task/processes to see if anything is a resource hog
registry full of years worth of dross
spyware/virus infections
damaged/full hard drive
undefragmented

All possibilities or a combination of several

and the list goes on...staggers the brain to tell the truth

cheers chaps. turns out i'm running at about 300k!

frankly i'm sick of bt and their paper thin excuses.

can anyone recommend another landline provider other than bt (i can't get cable here) or i'm i stuck with them? tried hunting but it seems all i can get are isps - i'm not daft enough to use bt's archaic "download limit" isp at twice the price of everyone else - and it turns out the fault on my line is bt... again!

Try running a spy ware programme, if you've never done this before, you'll find hundreds of the little fuckers monitoring everything you do and hence grinding your machine to a halt. Heres a review

or you might have a Root Kit hidden on your PC which anti spyware can't find, in which case you can probably find a rootkit killer or something on the internet.

I reckon its the spyware personally.

If the lines at fault then it doesnt matter who your ISP is

About all you can do is make sure your plan is meeting the agreed minimum targets.Maximum speed is just a marketing tool and the actual guaranteed speeds are sadly most likely what your receiving.

Check out what your ISP Plan is meant to be providing according to the regulator rules.Lots of useful information here as to which ISPs are trying to do the right thing
