Shouldn't underestimate or ignore the role of producers Paul Okenfold & Steve Osborne who I think really brought something to 'Pills, Thrills ..' and were a big part of its sound. You can argue that it took the Roses much longer to incorporate dance music into their sound ie Fools Gold .. Mondays were more innovative but both bands have their merits.
Some good stuff on the first Black Grape album too.

Neither. The Roses were an empty bag of tricks and there was always something faintly repellent about Shaun Ryder.
Then again I utterly loathed the whole baggy era (all fifteen minutes of it). Clubs full of clueless mongs in bad clothes talking absolute shite. Awful.

I would have thought that in any era the 'clueless mongs' and their 'shite talk' are constants. It's only the quality of their visual appearance which is a variable, and that's a matter of opinion. At what point did you breath a sigh of relief that the mongs had wised up, that their conversation was much more relevant and insightful, and that they looked sharper ? I think you might be being very selective in your recall.

Song and music wise, The Stone Roses: it was just the time, the era, the significance of the music to me at the time.
In terms of characters, stories and 'mad shit', yeah, Ryder and Bez ace it of course.
What did you think of Ryder's next project with Kermit, 'Black Grape'?? One album, but feckin magic; anthemic and another part of a golden age in 90s Britpop*.
*Read: 'Shitpop' if you didn't happen to be a student in the '92-'98 epoch. !wink! !grin!
