For me it has to be Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy starring Alec Guinness. Watched it when it came out in '79 ish and thought it was bloody brilliant, bought the video and have now got the DVD. Watched it again this week and it still stands the test of time, great story, great acting and very well made. Once Guinness agreed to star in it all the other great actors like Ian Richardson, Bernard Hepton, Beryl Reid, Patrick Stewart, Joss Ackland etc all jumped on board.
Smiley's People (the follow up) is nearly as good and well worth buying.
Whats the best TV programme ever made?

The Prisoner. End of thread.
Re: Whats the best TV programme ever made?
Well I know its US made but I have to nominate Seinfeld.
It had a very good run and I think after the first slow couplfe of years went on to be maybe the funniest show I have ever seen. Repeat viewing of old episodes never gets boring even though I have heard the jokes time and time again and no the programmes inside out.
When you first watch them you think how is this all going to come together at the end, and yet it always does. Not to menton some of the funniest characters of all time. George made it for me he was the best, but there were so many who made cameos and not so regular appearances that gave excellent memorable performances. Ironically the one guy who I thought was not good in the show was Seinfeld himself.
Also a mention to The Simpsons for all the reasons fans of the show will know.
From a UK point of view, well how about The Singing Delective. A truely groundbreaking show featuring an cracking complex storyline, brilliant performances led by Michael Gambon who has never been better, and some excellent musical set pieces.
Theres probably a load more I could mention and go on and on but those three are some of the best ever.

Apart from Match Of The Day you mean. Love it or loath it (or them in it) I'd go for Auf Weidersein Pet meself. Just captured the times then and my sense of (Derek & Clive) humour.

Graham Taylor: the impossible job
Most football documentaries have really nothing to say but this one gave some real insights.

Sorry, but the "Seinfeld show" was absolute shite, I've alway's hated those American "comedy" imports, like the the"Gary Shandling show".
God, talk about being anally retentive... The reason why they were shown late night on beeb 2 is because....... nobody watched them and why? cos they are not funny.. only watched by people who thinks that Ricky Gervais is talented..
On the other hand, one of the best t.v. programmes ever made was the "Edge of darkness " in the late eighties.

I'll second Tinker Tailor, stunning acting and a cast that will never be equalled. I also loved the first Prime Suspect, Dr Who with Pertwee and Baker, The Two Ronnies, Porridge, I Claudius and from my childhood, The Wombles and Paddington!

Two old stalwarts from me:
Life on Earth.
The World at War.
A side nod to Frasier as well, especially the pre Niles/Daphne marriage seasons. It lost something after that.
