Re: best places to go in soho?
When I first went to Soho, me & my g/f walked into a gay bar which was cool, but I didn't fancy a full night of gay bars so I had an idea.
I walked up to a homeless crackhead in the street, gave him a couple of quid, and asked him where the best bars were. He said he'd been on the streets 14 years and told me all the best places, about 8 of em, some members only but we still got in & had a great time!
Can't remember the name of the bars but look around for homeless people & get your change ready! They know everything there is to know about Soho!

Interesting idea Sam, and obviously it worked for you. I'm just intrigued as how "homeless crackheads" are supposed to know which are the best bars & clubs - especially since (as you say) some of them are "Members Only" and therefore presumably have at least some pretentions of exclusivity (and would therefore also presumably politely refuse your typical "homeless crackhead" entry, citing dress code or some suchlike!).
Not trying to be funny - it's just that if I were in a strange city looking for some good clubs, walking up to a homeless crackhead in the street wouldn't be the first idea that would spring to mind.

He only gave me the names of bars that seemed to attract the most people. He didn't tell me what colour the carpets were inside, or how cheap the beers were....lol!
We had a great time & wouldn't beleave some of the people we met! !wink!

For late night snack/coffee specially around 3-4am Bar Italia in Frith st. almost oposite Ronnie Scotts, if that's still open.
I lived in the west end for most of my life, spending a lot of time in Soho from a teen, because in the 60's it was full of music/instrument shops, and can say that there are so many places today, with one for each persons taste..
Just go there and wander round

Jock..
Don't wear just a kilt and nothing else the next time... LOL.
If you walk down one of the many small , dark allies it is wise to look around, as that's where the drug users hide away.. . But Old Compton, Wardour St. etc. couldn't be safer these days... The area is alive 24/7
Oh Chipmunk.. Just be careful what bars you walk in to.. Most near Wardour St. end of Old Compton are gay
