But in a world where life is cheap, conscience is rare and taking what you want, at the expense of other people, is de rigeur, should we be surprised ---or even care?

For sure we live in a fucked up world.
Estimated worth of the diet industry in the USA: $33 billion.
Estimated daily cost of feeding a starving child in Africa: $1.

Chilling headline and thats about it
I mean a worldwide figure covering all manner of circumstances is hardly a meaningful statistic(if there are any)
Whats really chilling is the amount who try and fail in the attempt
A bit like the number of Road Fatalities which are always is given an airing to show how safe the roads have become under the present Governement
The vital stat that you'll never hear is the number of serious permanent injuries which you can usually get by multiplying the Road fatality Figure by between 200/300
cheers

Re: Chilling reading
"Suicide is a major public health problem and accounts for 1.5% of the total cost of disease to world society," said Jose Bertolote, mental health specialist at the WHO.?
Was a bit put out by the tone of the article ? there was an undercurrent, an agenda, a received wisdom that people who take their own lives are mentally ill. This may be true in many instances, but certainly not all. Many people kill themselves because they find the life they have intolerable. Maybe the gods have DNA have played a particularly cruel joke on them ? maybe they are particularly unattractive, inadequate and/or stupid, so much so that they cannot have self respect and take part in the social intercourse most of us take for granted - Imagine the mental aguish. You see a fabulous, gorgeous, girl, you want her, but you know you could never, ever, get a girl like that (or any girl) because you are a small, ugly, moron. If you are not blessed with the tools to compete a reasonable level in our society, be it social or economic, you're going to have a pretty miserable time. Some people in those situations decide that they are simply not going to stand for it any longer, and they bail out. They are not imaging they have problems; they do, and consequently, they are not mentally ill.
Then there are the people that have gotten themselves into a tangle. Maybe gotten into irredeemable debt, murdered someone (for whatever reason) or maybe they are being bullied or tormented. These people are not imaging these problems ? they are real, they do have them, which can mean that life will be pretty unpleasant from then on. They choose not to stick around and face them. Killing oneself before one can be sent to Strangeways for 30 years seems an entirely rational and understandable course of action in my book.
Of course what we see here is the middleclass, socialist/BBC agenda ? they don?t want to face the fact that some people are so intrinsically crap that they themselves decide there is no point in entering the rat race. They don?t want to face the fact some people who fall at one of life?s (metaphorical) hurdles and injures themselves, will be in so much pain that they decide put themselves out of their own misery.

Re: Chilling reading
As someone who has very seriously contemplated this route more than once in the last months and years all I can say to you Dibble is hear hear.
I certainly dont consider myself to be mentally ill - I have a fantastic career, am very intelligent and a well respected person. However, I have issues in my life which most people dont know about or wouldnt be able to fully comprehend without having been there.
Suicide is actually everyones fault and everyones problem - society as a whole has a big part to play in this cos anyone who doesnt come up to societies perception of what is right and perfect and beautiful etc etc can be made to feel that there is no reason to want to go on anymore.
We all need to support people who are less fortunate than ourselves - if you have a mate who has problems getting a girlfriend or know someone who tends to keep themselves to themselves or who is very short or very fat or spotty or whatever you should make the effort to make them feel wanted and that they fit in cos if you dont then the risks of them doing something increase hugely and then you will have that on your conscience for the rest of your life.
Everyone is at risk but the above is especially true of young single professional males aged from their late teens to late 20's - if u know anyone who fits the bill then go see them and make them feel good about themselves again.
How do I know this? Well Im a 28 yo single professional male who lives alone and therefore spends a lot of time alone and I have very low self esteem and no confidence due to my looks. As I said I have been there too many times before and if you are unlucky enough like I am to also be going through some major emotional problems (due to relationship problems) then it can all just get too much and suicide seems like a very attractive option.

Worth noting too that the so-called festive season is a time when the statistics rocket. People feel more alone, and worthless, and without hope at a family time of year.

What a fucking excellent post!

So I started making porn!
Dibble, respect.

Re: Chilling reading
Well, thanks chaps. I just wanted to make the point, that's glaringly obvious to me, that very many of the people who commit suicide have real, not imaginary, problems. Life may have dealt them a crap hand, and that's not fair. But what really annoys me is these middleclass lefty sorts trying to give out the impression that everyone who wants to commit suicide must be mentally ill i.e. their problems are only imaginary, or in the minds of everyone else, which is quite plainly, bollocks - I?m sure John Merrick would confirm this were he alive today.
It?s not fair on these people ? God never consulted them on what kind of person they would like to be or what kind of life they fancied living. So I conclude that some degree of sympathy and understanding should be in order and steps be taken to help them, and furthermore, genetic research accelerated to ensure that no one else has to bear these kinds of burdens in future. Speaking for myself, although I?m pretty content and at ease with who/what I am, if God had thought to asked me I probably would have specified, the looks of Piers Brosnan, the strength of Mike Tyson, the brains of Einstein, the insight of Nostradamus, the wit of Oscar Wilde, plus the charisma and cock of Errol Flynn! Successes and the enjoyment of life would thus be virtually guaranteed.
But there?s another group of people who might wish to die before their allotted time ? those with awful disabilities and illnesses, like that Dianne Pretty sort. If someone's illness or disability becomes so painful and unpleasant, if they have to have EVERYTHING done for them, and consequently cannot retain any self respect, they should be allowed to make a dignified exit, and not made to endure the physical and metal pain of existence, just because some elderly upper middleclass fuckers in Parliament and the Lords are terrified of death themselves and dare not look it in the face.
