You're dead right CJ - like most bigots, Dibble looks for justification for his prejudice and tries to make it look reasonable. No need to apologise.

In this case, the pope was just doing what popes and the church have done with dull consistency for a thousand years: attack Islam and/or Judaism. The response from Muslim leaders was, rightly, to demand an apology. And then of course the Islamophobes jump on the bandwagon and try to make out that it's the Muslims, rather than the bigoted Vatican, that are in the wrong.

If any Muslim leader attacked Jesus like the pope attacked Mohammed, imagine the reaction of the Christian fundamentalists! Europeans (and our white cousins who run America) are backward and hostile to the rest of the world, but try to make out that the cultures we attack are the backward ones, even while we continually bomb and occupy their land.

True muslims are unlikely to attack Jesus as he is a major prophet in that religion. Nevertheless if such an attack did happen I have little doubt that the Christian fundamentalist would behave in the way you suggest. Particularly the lunatic fringe in the USA.

Oh, and back on he subject of Muslims ? I had a real live one sat at my kitchen table yesterday. We drank coffee together and talked of health food, boxing (he runs a gym), collecting conkers (in our youth) and the exploits of our mutual friends and associates. It was a cordial afternoon.
