Just heard about this today. If we're talking guitar heroes this guy certainly fitted the bill. RIP.

Re: Age old Guitar Hero poll
I remember reading a book about the Rolling Stones and one of the many things it mentioned was that Brian Jones was at a gig in London, prior to being in the band, which was only the second time ever that an electric guitar had been used at a gig. I can't remember who it was that was playing. It was about 1959 I seem to recall. That would have been amazing to have attended, even better to have been at the first one!
I was never particularly a fan of Michael Jackson but I remember he asked Eddie Van Halen to play on 'Beat It'. That is one of my favourite all-time guitar solos. Another is from David Gilmour on Pink Floyd's song 'Comfortably Numb'. That track is one of Floyd's best known and a real crowd pleaser at their live shows over the decades. It is because of that mega guitar solo that the song is so popular I've always thought.
Here is Eddie Van Halen doing the 'Beat It' solo unaccompanied:
A great cover here of David Gilmour's 'Comfortably Numb' solo:

Gilmours solo in Comfortably Numb is exceptional, a great piece of music enhanced by the sound and clarity. He pioneered the way forward for the next generation of guitarists for looking toward sound technology.
On the other hand Van Halens solo in Beat It is one of his worst and when it comes to guitar wanking, I still have nightmares of his 13 minute solo at Donington 1984. Even worse when Michael Anthony bored the whole crowd with a bass solo third song in.
I will hold my hand up to liking guitar shredders but Mr. Van Halen is not one of my favourites, each to their own I suppose bud.
Oh and I forgot on my list Eric Johnson.

Good shout with Alvin Lee, I saw him in around 1991 at the old Town & Country Club with Wishbone Ash and Man supporting Ten Years After. What a night that was, great music with great guitar work. In the pub last night somebody asked me which band he played for. After saying Ten Years After we checked the jukebox out and found 2 tracks, we played I'm Going Home a few times.

Aswell as Gilmour's amazing solo on 'Comfortably Numb' I've also always liked the way the song is formatted. You normally get the solo in the middle of a song then the song carries on how it did for the first half. With this track the solo, which is very long, is the entire second half of the song. It goes on for ages until the track fazes out. Quite original I think.

I agree with you reagrding this, it is by far the best track on the album though the album itself is excellent. Always liked the sound of Gilmours guitar, quite distinct. You ought to check out his solo album On An Island, very goodlistening indeed.

I have the On An Island album, I bought it when it came out. It was huge as I recall, number 1 all over the place, as big (more or less) as a Pink Floyd album. In many respects it WAS a Pink Floyd album though - Rick Wright was on keyboards so it had that distinct Pink Floyd keyboard sound. Nick Mason wasn't there but he was hardly on "Pink Floyd's" Momentary Lapse Of Reason album in 1987 either.

I found Momentary Lapse Of Reason a little disappointing with regards to the quality of the songwriting. No one can doubt that the sound of Floyd was/is Gilmour but the beating heart IMO was Roger Waters. He tool over the majority of the songwriting after Barrett left.
