UK's rating of its Covid-19 response lowest of 14 countries in poll.

Only 46% of voters in Britain think their country has done well.

Highest excess deaths in the world according to most up-to-date data.

Highest forecast GDP decline expected in the next six months of any G20 country.

World beating.

"People will be encouraged to go back to their workplaces as part of a government campaign starting next week."

Consider "Working From Home" from a Tory strategy perspective. I find it bizarre, they are cutting their own throats.

Priorities you thought impossible to achieve that you meet for free and could get credit for:

- Reduced pollution/carbon
- Much improved work/life balance
- Reduces strain on overburdened public transport systems
- Effectively generates a considerable pay rise for many indebted Britons going into a recession
- Promotion of the Digital Britain agenda
- Widespread modernisation of working practices
- "Levelling up" re-balancing the economy away from London and to the regions revitalising swathes of neglected parts of the country and those with hitherto weak or only seasonal employment opportunities
- Its what voters actually want

Problems with this
- Property investor donors don't like it.

Another day, another U-Turn....

The Home Office is to stop using a video it put on social media accusing migrants' lawyers of being "activists".

The animated clip on its Twitter feed said the current asylum system was "open to abuse", allowing lawyers to "delay and disrupt returns" of people.

The Law Society said the video was "misleading and dangerous".

Home Office permanent secretary Matthew Rycroft said the video "should not have been used on an official government channel" and would not be posted again.

Initially, a spokesman for the department said it would not be removing the original post - viewed more than 1.6 million times - but several hours later it had been taken down.

Boris Johnson emerged from his holiday not to tackle the ?A? Level results crisis ? but to joke about it.

On a visit to Castle Rock School in Coalville on Wednesday, the Prime Minister declared: ?I?m afraid your grades were almost derailed by a mutant algorithm, and I know how stressful that must have been for pupils up and down the country.?

A ?mutant algorithm? is an appropriate phrase. For it describes not the scandal of the exam results but Johnson himself.

His entire career has been one of mutation. In the 1990s and early 2000s, he was a hang-and-flog-em social conservative, crusading against single mothers, gay people and anti-imperialists. In the late 2000s and 2010s, he was London?s own lovable rogue, advertising conservatism with a liberal wink on its face. And, since 2016, he has been the scorched-earth demagogue prioritising Brexit and power over the country?s democratic institutions.

Like an algorithm, Johnson does not simply act at random. He does not ?go rogue?. The algorithm works like any computer game: it performs the functions someone has programmed for it. It may seem out of control, but it is in fact doing exactly what it has set out to do.

Of course, Johnson did not take ownership of the exam results debacle. Of course, he blamed a disembodied computer glitch instead of a deliberate and conscious piece of policy-making supervised directly by him. Just as love means never having to say you?re sorry, Johnson?s self-love means never having to take responsibility. Everything is the fault of someone or something else: voters, foreigners or computers.
