Wide angled lens for Nikon?

Post by jimslip »

Can anyone suggest a nice wide angled lens that will go on a Nikon D5000 and can anyone explain why a mate of mine has a Canon lens which says its 28-200 which is WIDER than my Nikon 18-200 lens? I thought all 18's would be the same. He said it's because his lens is expensive and his camera is "Full frame", whatever that means!

My lens was about ?200 as I recall. I think his lens is about ?700, but why would this effect the actual amount you get in the frame?

Any help appreciated!

Just to make it more clear than my original post, my friend's 28mm lens gets more in the frame in its widest angle, than does my Nikon 18mm lens at its widest angle, doesn't make sense.

I have a Canon EOS 550D, which does not have a full frame sensor.

Canon lenses refer to 35mm full frame size. On my camera the focal length of the lenses equates to x 1.6, because of the cropping effect of the small sensor.

The same lenses that I use would have a wider angle of coverage if I bought a Canon body with a full frame sensor.

I have asked for this profile to be deleted.

I notice on some American websites, they ensure all the girls have ginormous butts and all the dicks look enormous, I know they use wide angled lenses, but they don't seem to get much distortion.

I'm not trying to give my cuties, the "Big bottoms" or the "Jumbo saddle bags" effect but I'm intrigued al the same!

I am sure that you now have enough info to explain the effect of image sensor size on the wide angle coverage; getting back to a recommendation, I am very happy with my Sigma 10-20mm which I use on a Nikon D200, which has the same size (DX) sensor as your D5000. The comparable focal length on a 35mm frame (full-size sensor) is 16-32, considerably wider than the other lenses you mentioned. However, I guess this may not five you length you require at the other end of the scale.

Who says that size does not matter?

Do you mean 10-20 or 10-200mm? So from what I've been told, your 10 equates to about 18 on a D5000 does does this sound correct?

No its 10mm-20mm which is why I mentioned that it may not be long enough if you require telephoto capabilities.

The effective 35mm focal length is 16mm-32mm.

I don't think you will find anything wider than your 18-200 if you want both wide angle and telephoto, as it would be too much of a compromise on quality.
