Not too sure if this is one of the more recognised methods of fundraising. I can see some celeb asking the question "How did you raise all this money Jennifer?".......

To use an analogy taken from Michael Moore, Giving money to charities like Comic Relief is a bit like going to church: "you show up once a week, it makes you feel good, and you've done your duty. Then you can get back to all the fun of sinning!" I don't contribute to these charities on the basis that it'll encourage me to sit back, content that I've "done my bit" when in actual fact all I've done is appease the part of me that feels guilty; pushed it back to the corner of my mind where it will stay until the next time I see other people do something and think I must do something similar, or get upset at some skinny black African kids with lots of flies around them.

I'm not suggesting it's wrong to give to Comic Relief, of course not. But let's not use charities like that to 'get ourselves off the hook' until the next one comes along. Becuase that's insulting and offensive to the people we are coughing up our annual tenner to support. If we really gave a shit we'd be giving a fat lot more then the occasional brown note. I'd rather we be honest about all this then attempt to maintain our 'charity persona' by quenching our Comic Relief 'day of guilt'.

Most 'aid' charities would be unnecessary if our governments stopped exploiting weaker economies and got their shit together politically, true.
I agree about 'impulse' donations, although I don't think one should ever try to suppress good intentions with cold counsel. On the other hand, I despise the whole 'celeb' charity thing, particularly when being exhorted to part with some of my minuscule amount of hard-earned by some multimillionaire talentless microstar. After much thought some time ago, I decided to covenant some of my salary to a couple of (I think) important (and, equally vital, effective) causes......they generally prefer this method, as the more or less 'guaranteed' income allows them to pre-plan schemes and target their scarce resources more judiciously.
But I'm torn between the attitude of 'if I don't give anything at all the govts. of the world. will HAVE to do something eventually', and my innate cynicism that they will never do owt as long as mugs like thee and me do their job for them..........

My experience about Comic Relief was'nt a happy one.

The large sex company that I worked for got together a fund raising scheme, the usual thing, running through the streets pushing a bed, everyone dresses up in funny clothes etc..

And they collected quite a bit of money for this charity concern, the BBC refused to take the cheque because they did'nt want to be associated with a company that dealt in sexual activity...and we are talking about a chain of well known High Street boutiques.
This was around 1990.

As some commentator on the radio said this morning..."I'll be glad when it's all over"...

....and I bet they didn't say to the done-down charities 'oh, by the way. there's ?x less than there might be, because our moral relativism wouldn't allow US to accept, on your behalf, YOUR money....'
