I was a long time user of Adobe Premiere but for me, Sony Vegas rules supreme :)

It's an intuitive piece of software with a great learning curve for anyone just starting out on it.

We had Pinnacle 11 & got an upgrade to P12, depending on price go for the best one, Sony Vegas 8 is brilliant but were scratching the surface with this one (still learning etc) whilst we do everything on P12

Pinnacle is very easy to use, in fact it's the fastest and most user friendly piece of software I have used, makes editing fun but it's encoding is dire, very limited options and poor quality output, de-interlacing is even a bitch.
After the best quality web files? then avoid this software.

I use Premiere Pro, yes it was a bitch to learn but it's very powerful, and it's intergration with Photoshop adds flexibilty for some very slick results, Adobe Media Encoder is it's default output is pretty good and very flexible, there's plenty of tutorials & books for it too.
(you-tube has tons of tutorials)

Vegas, I have had a dabble, I like it but found learning resources limited so struggled and was too lazy to plod on with it.

Final Cut - I can't comment on, I have heard nothing but good about it though, but need a Mac so would cost me a ton to migrate to that with the hardware & software!

Good starter kit:

Quad core PC min 4gb ram with SATA II swap out drive facilities
Matrox RTX 2 real time card
Premiere Pro CS4
Sony Cinescore (music composer)
Canopus Procoder 3 (bulk encoding)
Video Charge full version for screen caps and many more bulk encoding jobs such as flash.

You can fly pussy all over the place with this basic setup in real time if DVE's do it for you, but bear in mind the rule "If it won't cut then dissolve it"
Best to have stand alone systems if you want productivity, these specs work well for our work.

The standard edit packages are Adobe Premiere on the PC or Final Cut Pro on the Mac. Having used both, FCP is even more powerful, although Premiere will do more than anyone really needs for porn.

I wouldn't recommend using something weird and wonderful that nobody's ever heard of because even if it's easier to learn, once you do hit problems you won't be able to find anyone to ask for help...

Good luck!

Premiere Pro. Easy enough to use the basic functionality.

You need a fast PC though. Used to take me 4 or 5 hours to process and export a 20 min vid from mpeg2 (20GB approx) to .wmv (120MB approx).

Hi Mr Mark.

Download a demo of Sony Vegas (you'll be able to use it fully for 30 days) and use it to export your vid.

Hopefully you should find it takes a lot less than 4 to 5 hours. :)
