Bugger me jj, Tesco's are virtually giving away DVD players with their cornflakes, or you can plug an external DVD into your computer for not very many pennies.

As I understand it he's already got a DVD player but doesn't like them - iirc because of the lack of fine control over fast forward, sentiments with which I entirely agree.

Yes, you can have a problem with badly-authored DVD's and, regrettably, most UK porn is bad in this respect.

One notable exception is Uncle Ben, who puts plenty of 'scenes' in his DVD's, anything up to six or seven references in each scence so finding a particular bit doesn't require minutes on fast forward.

On the other had if you do want to freeze a frame...

That's not what I meant. No matter how good the authoring you do not get fine control over fast forward - I mean continuous fast forward, not jumping from scene to scene. This is inherent in the technology as a DVD is not a film on reel.

Absloutely.
They're all very fine and indestructible (ho, ho, the designers obviously never met any kids)), and the pic quality is SUPPOSED to be superior, but gimme good ole VHS every time.
I just don't see why the suppliers should already be going along with the High Street's sounding of the death-kneel for the older platform. DVD ought to be the optional mode, not VHS.
