I am in the same boat. I live in a small village. BT have more or less said we stand no chance of getting broadband. There is no cable as 5 years ago two companys locked horns over the rights to provide cable in our area. The result, the company who laid the cable were denied the transmission rights but still own the cable and refuse to relinquish it. My only chance is satallite broadband, still, I suppose that is the price for being a rural bastard.

John - why not either buy a router (not sure about Mac compatability though) or a very cheap second hand Windows PC and a hub / switch and use it as a router / proxy / gateway?
That way u dont need any additional software and if anything goes wrong it is on a fully supported platform so the fuckers can't complain and "have" to support you!
Just a thought...

I live in another small village, we have our own BT exchange! The only problem is.....we don't have a big enough population to meet the 400 trigger! Yet, over 50% of us want broadband according to BT's Broadband Services. BT have offered us individual satellite connections. It's just a shame I can't meet the "NASA" size budget required!

All John needs is this The Demon Express Solo package. It is configured wit Mac users in mind, comes with an excellent Hermesdat ADSL modem, the appropriate Mac drivers and a guided installation program on CD ROM. Since installing mine I've never had to give it a second thought. It just works, no muss, no fuss.

excellent point Dibble - I assumed that John had already checked out other ISPs to see if they could offer Mac support which is why I made my suggestion!

I'm using Freedom 2 Surf ADSL, and have been since March 2002. Very good service and ?22.50 a month, which is pretty cheap for adsl I think. Highly recommended if anyone is thinking of making the jump.

I agree with the BT comment, its Shit is what it is.
I live in a small village on the west coast of Wales. So when i first moved here, I contacted a numerous companies, & only 2 Suppliers could run Broadband or ADSL in this Area.
But, as yet, there is a potential waiting list of between 5-7 Yrs before they will even consider canvasing the area for interested parites, so its either a shit BT Supply, or a shit "Normal 56K Dial-Up" Service.
Truly pissed off with 56K Modems.
Snake!
