As far as I know, the only stuff you can get from Telewest, or indeed any cable company is what they want give you! Satellite dishes can be pointed at varius sources and any signal can be picked up, and with the right kit, decoded whether its a Sky channel or not.

Cable companies do that part for you and then send the signals down the line to your cable box so in effect they control the "aerial"

There is no hardcore on british cable or satellite.

Satellite hardcore channels can be run and registered in the UK as long as the uplink/transmission facilities are overseas. For example Channel Bizarre was run from an office in North London but all the videos were uplinked from Holland using a satellite leased from BT.
