What Video Editing Software?

I learned how to cut on Avid (well I used to cut film and two machine but that was a LONG time ago...) and it was brilliant, ridiculously expensive but brilliant. When Final Cut Pro was launched I bought a pretty high end FCP edit suite, I found that in some ways it was better than AVid. It certainly gave Avid the kick up the arse they needed and they have now launched a better a cheaper range.

As for end quality, surely that is to do with hardware rather than software. My experience (from working continually in broadcast) is that FCP has a real stronghold and absolutely loads of companies are producing TV on FCP, I think that AVid and FCP are the only ones I can work on effectively and effeciently. It is worth the investment in time as once you have learnt it you will work much quicker than with something like Premiere (!thumbsdown!).

The problem with Pinnacle Studio is, when the program starts to go wrong, which i found it does and often, theres little you can do except start over from scratch. When i picked up Pinnacle Studio about 2 years ago after all the rave rewiews it was recieving in the press i was left feeing ripped off. The help Pinnacle offer is useless. The help Pinnacle offer is a never ending list of anwsered questions on their web site. After all the problems i experienced with Pinnacle Studio i did some search on the web only to fidn that many other people had experience all the same short coming i had experience. So a big thumbs down to Pinnacle Studio. In case you were wondering about my PC set up. 2 years ago it was up to the minute, PIIII, lots of memory and PC desgined for editing on by Sony.

After Pinnacle Studio i tested out Vegas by Sony. What a dream to use. It never crashed it was so well desgined that i only used the help files on a few occasions and it does so much more than i would ever need of it.

I tried out Adobe Premier after i had used Vegas, just to see what it was like after many people raved about it. Adobe Premier is superior to Pinnacle Studio although after using Vegas, Adobe Premier seemed like a poor mans Vegas.

you mean pinnacle studio is not used by every industry bod in the free universe. of course i'm taking the piss and pointing out how amateur the studio range is and even more shocking that someone would suggest using it for serious editing. or perhaps the studio range is good for mickey mouse in toy town productions

For newbies with no idea about video, Pinnacle is the easiest to use for web site editing. I've never claimed it's the best. All I need to do is cut a scene in to 5 min parts for my surfers and I've had no complaints.

If it came down to editing for a Dvd, that would be a totally different story. An ex model who was recommended to me for some editing work, as she had started to do this, used a Mac and all the top programmes and made me a great demo, which I know Pinnacle couldn't create. The only prob was the time she took to create it

I think it's a case of horses for courses. If you're starting and just want to edit for a web site, Pinnacle is good. If you are editing for a Dvd.. That's when Vegas etc. are far better.

You're right about Pinnacle crashing now and again, unfortunately, but for my needs and others it's suits the job. The most I lose is 5 mins.

What I hate more than anything is the time spent uploading vids to a site... Even though I'm in the middle of London, I can't get more than 1mb where I live.... Now that is a real bummer

newbies with no idea about video should not be in video let alone with web sites and even worse charging people for their work which they aint got a clue about. the term rip off springs to mind and probably explains the british am-cam market better than anything else

A newbie does not need to know about an MPEG-2 GOP Structure. A newbie does not need to know what an I-frame, P-frame or a B-frame is.

All a newbie needs is simple A-B Editing in a simple environment - Pinnacle does just that.

And there is nothing wrong with newbies owning websites - if you have a product to sell, it's a free market. If it does not cut the mustard, you won't make anything from it and it's certainly not wrong in giving them a chance or advice, which is what a lot have done on this thread.

Apart from your comments, all the other posts have been constructive. whether positive or negative. If you read what I said in my last post, I even state there are far better programmes for Dvd editing..Get over your dislike of me and read what people say...

so what you jacques are stating for the record is that in your opinion a modern day video editor does not need to understand basic mpeg structures a basic creating ed points. no doubt your output will be high quality cutting edge stuff with comments like that

kidda ive noted you do like to do things behind the scene out of sight or so to speak so mail you off forum i wouldnt. i have no rep to keep and nothing to hide. i read your reply where you tell one of the other posters in a different thread to take a flying fuck or words to that effect and all because he made a comment about his members not being happy with an output of low ress in mpeg1. the question was asked about output and you as per normal encouraged low quality output which would seem strange from a guy who has been making porn for a while and understanding that only high quality output ever survives. some people do appear to have a great respect for you but unfortunatley for me respect is something earned and not given and telling people to take a flying fuck is less than repsectfull especially when they are correct in their comments. so seeing as you are clearly a driving force in the new allience of uk adult producers why not raise the game and learn to edit with something more creative than pinnacle studio otherwise when they get on to big boy issues youll be strugling with your 3rs.
