R18 - any good then?

Post by Matt »

I never buy r18s. Well, I did do once, cos there was an ejaculation scene in it (man, I have a high quality life!!) but I don't generally as my purchases come from internet companies and through mail order, not sex shops.

However, I've been wondering whether R18's are any good. Firstly, is there a fixed cost on them, or do some sex shops charge more then others. Secondly, when you watch them do you feel as if you are watching it as the director intends it to be shown, or do you feel like the BBFC have made cuts even as an R18 to bring it into regulation?

From BBFC site.

'R18' To be supplied only in licensed sex shops to adults of not less than 18 years
The 'R18' category is a special and legally restricted classification primarily for explicit videos of consenting sex between adults. Such videos may be supplied to adults only in licensed sex shops, of which there are currently about 90 in the UK. 'R18' videos may not be supplied by mail order.
.
The following content is not acceptable
.
Any material which is in breach of the criminal law
Material likely to encourage an interest in abusive sexual activity (eg paedophilia, incest) which may include depictions involving adults role-playing as non-adults
The portrayal of any sexual activity, whether real or simulated, which involves lack of consent
The infliction of pain or physical harm, real or (in a sexual context) simulated. Some allowance may be made for mild consensual activity
Any sexual threats or humiliation which do not form part of a clearly consenting role-playing game
.
The use of any form of physical restraint which prevents participants from withdrawing consent, for example, ball gags
Penetration by any object likely to cause actual harm or associated with violence
Activity which is degrading or dehumanising (examples include the portrayal of bestiality, necrophilia, defecation, urolagnia)
.
The following content, subject to the above, may be permitted
.
Aroused genitalia
Masturbation
Oral-genital contact including kissing, licking and sucking
Penetration by finger, penis, tongue, vibrator or dildo
Non-harmful fetish material
Group sexual activity
Ejaculation and semen
.
These guidelines make no distinction between heterosexual and homosexual activity.

(last line is a bit suspect)

Hi Joe

Going back over the years to get a h/c video you had to buy from a sex shop under the counter or more often you swapped and copied if the film was really good. Now, through some technicality in the courts, h/c is becoming available certified R18.

Hope this loophole gets bigger to allow more freedom of choice.

See ya

If David Blunkett gets the job as Home Secretary you can expect all loopholes to be tightened. Frighteningly moralistic, he makes Jack Straw's attitudes to sex look like Julian Clary's.

UK made R18's are excellent but generally short in my experience.

I haven't seen many R18s, as the choice isn't very good yet, but the ones I have seen have been just as 'hardcore' (no reference to Max intended!) as in most American wall-to-wall. The Melon Farmers website gives details of R18 certificates, often including a list of cuts required by the BBFC, which are usually very slight. But presumably film producers don't bother submitting films for certification if they are wildly outside the BBFC guidelines. The guidelines are aimed mainly at violence and sadism rather than sexual activity as such.

UK made R18s are getting longer - Ben Dover's started making all his tapes 2hr 20mins, which seems to be the Euro/US standard (apart from those crappy American couples-orientated "features" which are far shorter). Since most UK h/c is done on low or no budget, we can assume that the only expense associated with longer films is copying them onto longer videotapes.

Since Jack Straw was/is so massively anti-porn and supposedly appointed Whittam-Smith as head of the BBFC to curb the tide of filth, we can assume that he was unhappy with the R18 ruling, so how would Blunkett be able to reverse it? At least without kicking up a fuss he doesn't need.
