Name your favourite dvd

Post by Corte »

Finding reviews of recent Euro movies can be near impossible.

Perhaps readers might suggest their own favourite dvd, maybe one per country of origin if preferred, and a line to say what was different/unusual.
Maybe Salieri, Dorcel, the more obscure Inflagranti - whatever seemed especially memorable.

To start things off, here are a few of note:

MAISON EROTIQUE [Harmony "Tanya Hyde"/Trevor Watson- Britain ]

- atmospheric use of classical-inclined soundtrack in the Baroque scenes, some flashes of cinema-quality camerawork, and unrestrained behaviour from one Claudia Rossi.

THE GIFT (Razorback - Roberto Valtuena - Spain)

outstanding creation of atmosphere in the opening scenes, sense of place, two of the indoor sex scenes in particular have intensely involved cast performances. Iberian machismo a bit strong (club toilet scene) but overall has a storyline worth following and a real acting tour de force from Sylvia Lancome.

M?SEN IN ?l (Magma- Moli - Germany)
Girl v girl oil wrestling bout in a small old-style bar-underground club turns sleazy when participants, referee and a few aroused spectators at watching tables join in an initially low-key orgy.
Highlights include the "spontaneous" entry into proceedings of individual women from audience. Lack of chrome, glam decor, or heavy US-style make-up/ loud OTT performers adds to the unusual realism, as do the muted lighting.
Variety in casting and the lithe Euro actresses add to erotic quality.
Sadly unavailable at present.

The recent trend here in EGAFD tends towards the identification of female (and to a smaller extent male performers).
Earlier people through e-mails and postings tried to provide more background information about plotlines and scene description.
I try now and then to provide more full description of movie content, but sometimes language limitations don't allow me to expand very much on the plotlines.
I am all in favour of more full movie description and reviews.

I think we all are; but there's so much basic info to be added that time to 'stop
and smell the coffee' is extremely limited. Bgafd was an exemplar in this regard,
but even that seems to gave fallen behind with the more recent stuff.

Just seen 'the Gift' and I wholeheartedly agree.
The camerawork and colouring are a little tricksy and over-elaborate at times
[normal, I find, for recent Spanish efforts] but the overall result is very
high-quality filth. Natalia's scene is stunning.

Good to hear others have also enjoyed The Gift.

Valtuena?s next offering ? released as two movies - was altogether more ambitious in scale and budget but arguably less perfectly realised. The futuristic, post-apocalypse ?Mundo Perro? [Dog World] & its finale/sequel: ?The Resolution? used interesting settings and excelled in some fields ? tight action sequences, intelligent casting, costume and photography, but left the viewer wondering if the concept overshadowed the eroticism.

Probably the initial script (summed up by a cast member as a Spanish Mad Max with Salma de Nora in the Mel Gibson role) suggested a more tantalising prospect in early drafting, or in storyboard form. Without more rounded characters, the energetic cast simply had too little to work with.

This hampered the sex scenes: our interest in the characters would have been stronger with just a little more depth in their writing. The leanness of the script excluded sequences showing attraction/ electricity that might have raised the heat. Yet the movies also showed imagination, visual impact, and moments of tension. Valtuena?s use of music to drive pace and intrigue (e.g. the title sequence in The Gift) remains forceful.

The gap between an acclaimed success and a near miss can be very fine. In a big production with a complex script it must be hard to maintain spontaneity, & a tightly ?orchestrated? feel results, coming a shade too close to a high-budget TV ad at times. A moment of humour, a slower interlude scene, or more gradual scene-setting now and then would have smoothed the flow. The dynamic Salma de Nora as a force of nature and the wild anarchy of the subterranean Dog World milieu she too-briefly explores offered more potential than the final film provided.

What would have been a return to a more secure ground of a contemporary, believable setting closer to The Gift in conception, his next project - an urban sex chronicle with comic touches set in present day Spain - has been hit by the economic downturn. Filming of ?La Vida Privada de Helena Brasal? began last year only for funding to collapse. The gap was reportedly filled briefly by a co-operative initiative, but it apparently remains unfinished.

Valtuena gets a near cinema quality in so many scenes. As one of Europe?s outstanding directors of sex movies, he deserves financial backing. Hopefully those with an appreciation of his vision - perhaps someone in Harmony, Evil Angel or Daring with a keen eye and a cheque book, or even the Orgazmik retail group who sell his movies in serious quantities- might show enlightened self-interest and help put his show back on the road.

Valtuena now has four/five accomplished films under his belt as director, aside from his earlier cinema work in other roles, a level of experience that suggests his best may be yet to come.

I've seen these also and tend to agree- the plot and effects detracted from the
sex. I'm not a great fan of 'post-apocalyptic' porn in general- I like a bit more
glamour : -) The rough sex in 'Gift' was 'edgy' and wholly realistic- Dog World's
seemed in contrast a little nearer miysogyny; that's fine for others [or for 'real
life'], but it tends to make me cringe watching it.
Still worth a look, but not in Gift's league.

My fave porn is the Heidi series done by Gunter Otto in the early to mid 90s. Even though it's in German, the series does a good job conveying some kind of plot and it has good editing and pacing so the sex doesn't get boring. Also, the women always look good wearing attractive clothing or lingerie and the camera tends to linger on their sexiness.

As good as the series is, it would be even better if the language was in English so I could better understand the plot, which would make the sex scenes hornier and more enjoyable. If someone can explain the plot here, that would great.
