RIP Mel Smith...
I heard he died today, a true comedy and directing talent. He and Griff Rhys Jones were a great comedy double act that few others have equalled in terms of quality of entertainment, and longevity. RIP Mel, you'll be missed.

Too fat to live.....
I grew up watching Not The Nine O'Clock News and it was very very funny indeed and very biting comedy indeed. I always thought that Kenny Everett who was on TV from the late 70s was a great deal more funny than NTNOCN, much more talented. I then grew up and relaised that Smith and Jones were Oxbridge and though talented indeed were part of that establishment and like my interest in Python it palled a bit at that discovery. Suddenly the Young Ones came along and it seemed fresher and more original even though Dawn French would pop up from time to time and spoil it a little by being talentless.
I thought Mel Smith like Griff Rhys Jones had gone off the boil a long time ago, made far too much money out of their media business, but their series together in the 80s was very funny indeed. I thought Rhys Jones showed a really nasty temper quite often in 'Three Men in a Boat' which disappointed me really. Mel Smith was a physical wreck even 30 years ago.

NTNOCN was the best I heard he fell with Pamela Stephenson that's why it ended!

Re: Colin's Sandwich
Yes it was actually very good, rather like Dear John with Ralph Bates. There was an atrocious US re-make of it though.
