Yeah, the descriptions could do with an update. Whenever I hear the term "dame" for the female equivalent of "sir", it reminds me of panto.

If you listened to the interview he admitted to feeling uncomfortable with the concept, but he later states that it is recognition for not only his achievements but the successes of cycling as a whole. The successes of the likes of Wiggins, Chris Hoy, Vickie Pendleton, Laura Trott etc etc. has resulted in a huge upsurge in interest in the sport amongst kids and this recognition just adds to the kudos to being a GB cyclist which didn't really exist 10/15 years ago.

It's not as if it comes with a cheque or anything so I don't see the problem.

I definitely agree about Margaret Beckett, particularly after she fiddled her expenses on behalf of her gardening hobby.

As for David Tanner, he is the unsung hero, therefore largely unknown, of British rowing. He's been Rowing Performance Director since 96 and has been responsible for putting in the infrastructure - coaching, fitness, health etc etc which has been fundamental in bringing great success in the Olympics.

The Olympic rowing medal winners are a humble lot from what I remember of post-race interviews and there was a lot of references to the fantastic team around them without which they felt they wouldn't have won. Dave Brailsford who is better known, has a similar job as Performance Director in UK Cycling.

Both have done fantastic jobs and deserve their knighthoods, I feel. I'm a sports nut, but watching the GB successes at cycling and rowing in the summer was one of my great memories of 2012.
