In accordance with Jim's request, we will not keep discussion of nature's mistakes to our own species. As Jim says, what about mistakes made during the evolution of the millions of other species?

Peacock tails are displayed to impress the female, but the tails are so big that the peacock can barely fly or run very fast. Surely there are less dangerous ways to attract females, especially as the peacock is a favourite food of tigers? Other birds have evolved to be so big generally that they can't fly at all, such as penguins and ostriches. An odd thing for the world to have birds that can no longer fly -- one of nature's mistakes or simply evolution in action?

Dolphins and whales have to breathe air, and despite being designed to live underwater, have to return to the surface regularly. They suffocate if they don't get to the surface in time. This is especially a problem for newborn calves, which are born underwater. Post mortems of dead calves sometimes show that it never got to the surface to take that first breath. So, why no gills? It's not like they couldn't have both gills and lungs, since salamanders and lungfish have both -- though it is unclear why dolphins and whales should have to breathe air at all???? What's more they can suffer from the 'bends' -- decompression sickness -- if they surface too quickly, just like any other mammal. And odd thing for a sea creature????

The giant panda is under threat of extinction and attempts to breed them usually end in failure, as pandas show very little interest in the opposite sex. Put a male in with a female and they usually ignore each other. No wonder the species is threatened? What's more, if 6 fingers are better than 5 for grasping, why do only pandas have this feature?

Bats share with terrestrial mammals -- from the mouse to the elephant -- a solid bone structure. Bu since bats fly, why don't they have the hollow, weight-reducing, bone structure design seen in birds?. On the other hand, if solid bones are better for a flying creature, why do no flying birds have this feature?

Kangaroos are grazers and grazing is tough on the teeth. But they do not have the high-crowned tough teeth of cows and horses, nor the continuously-growing teeth that rabbits have. Instead, new teeth grow at the back of the jaws and move forward, replacing the worn-out ones which simply drop out. But kangaroos cannot do this indefinitely: a kangaroo gets 4 sets of teeth and once those are worn out it starves to death. It's rare that a kangaroo dies of old age. On the subject of kangaroos and other marsupials, they have a handy pouch to carry their infants in. If this is a good design, why don't any other creatures have this feature? Why are human mothers lacking in this useful attribute?

"The thing that disppointments me about these aliens is that they made the cave paintings using clay and charcoal. I would have thought being aliens they would have had some more advanced painting materials. If they didn't have any advanced technology, how did they get here in the first place?"

They were stranded on the planet in the clothes that they wore. Cavemen were hairy creatures little different from apes whose spatial temporal brain lobes were not developed...

No. That is not true.

At the time you mention -- 15,000 years ago -- modern man had long been around. Fully modern behaviour, including art, music, self-ornamentation, long distance trade, burial rites etc is evident by 30,000 years ago, and sophisticated toolmaking is apparent from about 80,000 years ago.

Humans were actually making much better tools than apes as long as 2,000,000 years ago and by then were already very distinctly different from apes in terms of brain power and behaviourally were considerably more advanced than apes in many ways.

Typical isn't it? You land on earth, your luggage gets sent to Alpha Centauri. Happened to me once, only it was Schiphol and Eindhoven respectively, but it can be a real bugger all the same.

You say "Humans were actually making much better tools than apes as long as 2,000,000 years ago and by then were already very distinctly different from apes in terms of brain power and behaviourally were considerably more advanced than apes in many ways."

Wikipedia says :"According to genetic and fossil evidence, archaic Homo sapiens evolved to anatomically modern humans solely in Africa, between 200,000 and 100,000 years ago, with members of one branch leaving Africa by 60,000 years ago and over time replacing earlier human populations such as Neanderthals and Homo erectus."

Wikipedia is correct. Modern humans did indeed replace earlier human populations.

52,000 modern human culture started to evolve more rapidly. Jared Diamond, author of The Third Chimpanzee, and other anthropologists characterize this as a "Great Leap Forward".

Modern humans started burying their dead, using animal hides to make clothing, hunting with more sophisticated techniques (such as using trapping pits or driving animals off cliffs), and engaging in cave painting. As human culture advanced, different populations of humans introduced novelty to existing technologies: artifacts such as fish hooks, buttons and bone needles show signs of variation among different populations of humans, something that had not been seen in human cultures prior to 50,000 BP. Typically, H. neanderthalensis populations do not vary in their technologies.

Among concrete examples of Modern human behavior, anthropologists include specialization of tools, use of jewellery and images (such as cave drawings), organization of living space, rituals (for example, burials with grave gifts), specialized hunting techniques, exploration of less hospitable geographical areas, and barter trade networks. Debate continues as to whether a "revolution" led to modern humans ("the big bang of human consciousness"), or whether the evolution was more gradual.[87]
