Rangers FC

Post by David Johnson »

Rangers, one of the two, biggest clubs in Scotland with a long and glorious history has gone into administration.

Apparently if they lose their tribunal against HMRC, they could be liable for ?75 billion.

How on earth have the Revenue let Rangers get to owing that amount?

I had a string of threats and tax demands for ?600 last tax year.

It's quite simple David.I was in a similar situation about 20 years ago, owing a few hundred quid. They know they will get the money out of us one way or another. But for mega millions they settle for what they can get.

I am not sure if that is the reason. I know that there is a different attitude to corporate Britain compared to Joe Public, which is why Vodafone and Goldman Sachs got let off with large amounts of tax whereas we get stroppy letters for a few hundred quid.

However I think the key reason is that there is nowhere near enough checking and investigative work done into corporate Britain by HMRC. The result in the case of Rangers is that the club has been doing all sorts of dodgy stuff.

It's only 5 years salary of one professional footballer. Why bother? See that nice Dave chappie at HMRC and buy him dinner!

It's sad, but they've had this hanging over their heads for years, but the new owner did nothing to address it, knowing the bigger effect this could have on the club.

Probably working out how to get the English taxpayer to bail them out.

"two failed banks and one failed club, wooo-oo, wooo-oo"

Doesn't have the same ring as "Two world wars and one world cup" does it?

We have need of you again, great king.

As the son of Glaswegian Protestant I have a strong attachment to the Gers but this has been all of their own making. Technically they are, to use a well known accounting term, fucked. However if Rangers go down then the rest of Europe's top clubs will be caking themselves. Without Rangers the Tims will win the league every single season and that will render the SPL meaningless.
The shit is starting to hit the fan and about time too, football teams are for some odd reason immune to the vagaries of the tax laws everyone else seems to have to cow tow too....wonder how many HMRC staff are fans..
