Googling someone 40,000 times in a year...

A story in a newspaper today about a man stalking a woman reveals he Googled her name over 40,000 times in a year, aswell as constantly phoning her and emailing her. I condemn this guy, he is obviously a weirdo and should be punished. What freaks me out though is that other people discovered how many times he Googled her name. Does this mean that if someone has Googled their ex-girlfriend's name a few hundred times in a year, or if some teenage fan has Googled Justin Bieber's name hundreds of times in a year, they are stalkers too? With the guy in this story he has looked her up online many more times than that, and has done more than just Googled her, but him looking her up was mentioned as a significant part of his activities towards her. Are we stalkers on this forum because we may have Googled the names of our favourite pornstars many times (although none of us have done it 40,000 times obviously)? Also, who is keeping count?

I've Google her, Laura Hermansen, Cate Harrington, Angel Long, and a number of American stars too. It is obviously nothing like that many times, probably a hundred times or something over the last few years. If you are a fan you will search for them in the hunt for new material, once you know they've retired you do it occasionaly in the hope they may have come out of retirement. As I said though, who is keeping count? I've Googled ex-girlfriends, former work colleagues, people I knew at school, etc (like we all have). It seems very 'big brother' that someone, somewhere, keeps count.

It doesnt even make sense. How do you google someone 40'000 times a year (whips out calculator)...That woiuld be 109 times a day and nearly 7 times an hour (assuming he had 8 hours off for sleep)

Assuming this is true then he wouldnt have much time to do anyhting else. If he did then it must've been a full time job so how did he making a living???

And a crime against who? As the person would never know and it would never effect them in anyway.

Googling 40,000 times is a crime.

It's just be an example used to build-up a patten of behaviour when building court case to prove the guy was "stalking" some poor girl.

Problem is some guys don't understand the word "no" or the phrase "piss-off, I'm not interested".

Googling a porn stars name several thousand times isn't a crime, but that together with phoning and emailing her hundreds of times will be establishing a pattern of behaviour that would support a case of "stalking" which is (quite rightly) a crime.

They count every "Google" everyone ever makes.

They don't provide the service for free you know?

They want to track all the activity on their sites so they can use the data to assist their customer's in selling you you stuff.

Exactly, as with everything under the google brand, you are not the customer, the people buying the data you give them are.

No, not Google. It was stated in court that the police obtained the information of the frequent googling by examining the defendant's computer.
