A tad harsh on the lady killers and agree with mst of you that remakes are usually bad bt The lady Killers remake was actually pretty good because it was funny.
The chinese fellas hilarious death after swallowing the cigarette has made me laugh like crazy.
Is that not a Coen brothers remake? Theyve not done any wrong as film makers in my eyes.
Never saw the original btu I may well get round to it to compare

You really, really need to see the Ealing version of The Ladykillers.
I think that once you have seen the original you'll agree that it was superior to the Coen version.
You maybe a Coen Brothers gfan and liked their version, but I think you'll like the original more.

I have just come across a rather unusual remake. Several of Tony Hancock's classic TV episodes (among them: The Blood Donor) had been remade in Germany, in the same year (1961), with Georg Thomalla playing Hancock's parts.
Thomalla has a different comedic style from Hancock, less laid back and more in your face, but the material still works.
I stumbled across that by accident: I remembered a subsequent series by Thomalla fondly from my childhood, so I purchased the boxset when it came out last week and so I discovered these older episodes with the Hancock connection.

I remember a few years ago Paul Merton re-made some Hancock's Half Hour.
I particularly remember "The Radio Ham".
It didn't really work.
I think one of the reasons I couldn't accept it was that is was re-made in the present day, or the present day as it was 5-10 years ago when Merton re-made them.
Having a guy talking away on the long-wave radio in the internet / Skype age didn't really ring true.

You may well be right because a lot of British humour doesnt translate well when americans lay their hands on it.
Despite criticisms levelled at him if there was one director I think should've done The Italian Job remake it should've been Guy Ritchie.
Sure, he'd do it the same way as Snatch and Lock Stock but as far as Im concerned , they were great films

I can see that. The Thomalla versions didn't quite have that problem, as they were done in the same period as Hancock. Instead, they did a context switch into a German setting. That worked mostly quite well, except for the remake of The Bowmans.
The Bowmans is a parody on The Archers, and the problem with the remake was two-fold: (i) radio-soaps did not exist in Germany, at least there were none of any prominence, and (ii) Germany does not have national radio in the first place, it's all regional. So the kerfuffle created by the axing of one character did not ring true in the German setting.

That brought back memories, I've not heard that for years.
that was where Hancock played a yokal in the parody of the Archers and they tried to kill him off.
He got his revenge by re-writing the script and having the rest of the cast walk across a field and fall down a hidden mine shaft.
Classic.
I must seek it out and listen again.
