This is how big Britpop got...

Post by max_tranmere »

I saw a documentary about the Britpop music scene a few nights ago. Noel Gallagher, songwriter and guitarist with Oasis, was one of many people interviewed.

Two things he said really showed just how massive they were and just how big the scene became back in the 1990's. He said the band went from playing in pubs with no income (three years earlier) to a situation where he personally earned ?4 million in one week at one point - from their vast records sales. Think about that.

He also said that the same year, when they played the biggest shows ever in British history (two nights at Knebworth in 1996 to 250,000 people) that the show and the production was so huge that his personal amp-rig at the gigs was louder than a rocket taking off. He said that a large space rocket is 104db when it takes off. His amp-rig for his guitar at those huge shows was 108db. You would've heard him 10 miles away!

Start a band kids. The world is your oyster...

I look back at Britpop favourably, it was real live bands doing it. They were songwriters and self-sufficient live outfits. It was a massive two-fingers to fake music where the 'artist' was little more than a dancer employed to mime to tapes - the thing that had dominated the charts for many years in other words. The integrity was there with the live guitar bands that flourished during the Britpop scene.

I do think Oasis went seriously downhill after their second album. Someone I knew described them many years later (after they had released four or five albums) as a 'two album band'. He was correct I think. They were still great live right up until the end though.

Making bad music is worse than making fake music.

And those two "good" songs were? Discuss (with your usual vitriol?).

Isn't the reverse true? Surely bad - but sincerely meant - music has a purity of purpose?
