Well, I was scammed like this once in Soho.
It took me a bit by surprise, because even in the days before porn was legal i.e. when I bought from various bootleggers, under-the-counter merchants and dodgy Dutch mail-order companies, the fraudsters were in a minority. So to be scammed by someone in a shop was a bit of a shock. Never happened to me in sex-shops in Germany, not even in St. Pauli.
Unlike Max though I never went back. Once bitten twice shy. Considering my porn consumption, it was their loss.

...and those old porn films from the 1900s would probably now be worth a fortune, even if they weren't as advertised...

That happened to me once around the same time (early '80s) at a dodgy shop in Manchester. One of those dusty, tatty dives stuffed to the rafters with shelves full of well-thumbed used paperback books, cardboard boxes full of old mags and comics, with an "adult" section at the back behind a shabby curtain.
And behind the counter there'd always be a couple of meatheads who looked like they were just out of Strangeways after serving a 5-stretch for GBH.
The crap foisted off on me wasn't even of Fiesta / Men Only quality either. They turned out to be back issues of crappy "contact" mags hidden inside Color Climax and Rodox covers.
It was a common scam back in those days, and relied on the punter being too embarrassed/scared to go back and complain (which as a spotty naive 18 year-old, I was of course).
