Trout Mask Replica is always held-up as THE work. I think there were more coherent pieces. There is some nice stuff on 'Bluejeans And Moonbeams' for example which would be considered to be late period, but a track like 'Observatory Crest' holds its own.

Respect is due.

Beg to differ but his "music" is utter shite. Kind of stuff the critics love but so "good" that nobody buys it. At least Zappa's band produced some virtuosos like Steve Vai.

At least you've heard of him Arginald, as for me, all I can say is, who the fuck was he? I aint young and can remember when Bill Haley hit our shores, but for this bloke, nothing registers.

One of a kind

Impossible to categorise, Beefheart was a real one-off. Not so much rock as blues, free jazz, poetry all mixed up.

He influenced a lot of people. One of my favourite Tom Waits albums, Swordfish Trombones is very much influenced by Beefheart.

X Factor he wasnt.

Lick my decals, indeed!
