In fact, dear Jim Slip, the US actor involved WAS involved in gay movies
too and also did bi stuff.....
I like to hope that in the UK there is not much cross over between
hetero and gay stuff.....here in Hungary we have had the occasional
hepatitus scare in past 15 years but I cannot recall an Aids one because
there is little crossover of male performers (and Hungarian hetero males
tend to be extremely anti-gay).
Los Angeles, the prime shooting place of 85% of US porn, is a hotbed
of crossover as well as a drug-related culture out of all proportion to
that within the European porn industry.

It's a dangerous stereotype & ignorant to suggest only gay/bi performers carry HIV. A cert is only 100% valid for that day, after that for everyone it is a risk. It is then up to you to decide '...if ya feel lucky punk!'

Seems like there are lots of interesting points and arguments being discussed. A lot of comparrisons on how the US and Europe operate.
But the immediate concern for UK and Europe based performers and producers......is that many of our performers have been going to the US and working........and what will be the UK producers outlook for the short term with regards to their planned shoots.......should we go ahead.....or should we be seen to be responsible and suspend everything !!
How are the UK performers feeling about this whole thing?

But the fact remains that HIV is most prevalent in among gays and drug users (in the West at least) because anal sex and IV drug use are the ways in which HIV is most readily transmitted (Africa of course is different due to other factors being in play there).

That's not "stereotyping", simply established facts. Bear in mind also that drug use (and not just IV drug use) also royally fucks up the immune system, which in turn leaves the body more susceptible to 'successful' (if that's the right word) transmission not just of HIV but of all manner of other diseases in the first place.

I'm not going to claim that *all* HIV cases in the porn industry are "gay" related because I simply don't know, but look back at those we know about and you can certainly trace most of them back to gay/bi/drug activity somewhere along the chain - John Holmes, Lisa DeLeeuw, Marc Wallace, Darren James & his Brazilian ladyboy being cases that spring immediately to mind. I also recall reading at the time that in the Wallace and James cases, the females they passed it on to all got it via anal cream pies (though I'm willing to stand corrected on that if anyone knows any different).

I agree that in the grand scheme of things it is a small fraction but if you think of how many UK performers are back and forth through the LA industry it can only be a matter of time before it hits us.

The UK porn industry is very small in comparison so can you imagine how many performers would be affected if just one were to contract the virus in LA and potentially spread it in the 3 month window period in the UK?

What we've said for years biut still nothing is done about it because everyone is expecting someone else to put something in place but nothing wil get done without widespread support

We said last time that this will happen and when this one goes away it will happen again until it gets too close to home and too late

Gay bi, straight, promiscuous , intravenous drug takers whatever...Like the common cold, HIV is not prejudiced who it claims as a victim and thats the real scary part because if you get it you can get it from someone who got it from someone else you didnt even know

OEJ - what are the rules (if any) for testing in the UK industry? How is the problem addressed here?

I thought that there was some sort of system in place, as in the USA. But reading comments this thread it would appear that's not the case.

The rules are that your tests have to be in date within 30 days of your last test and show results for HIV and stds.

The problem with this is that some come on letter headed paper and others on hand written paper. there is no uniformity to the results so anyone could make up their own results on a computer if they wanted (and have)

i think as a result of the last camapaign performers ahve become more vigialnt to a tests authenticity but the NHS can easily be faked and they are notoriously evasive about what they would do in the event of knowing someone faked a cert under the aegis of the NHS
