The most famous song lyric in 1980's music...

Post by max_tranmere »

... is probably "I was working as a waitress in a cocktail bar" from the song 'Dont You Want Me' by The Human League. This is a brilliant track, and the League were a brilliant band but I've always been puzzled as to why this one line resonated so much as is still talked about even today. Any theories?

Some 1980's music, that on the surface seemed very non-radical and was seem as largely just entertainment, actually had a serious undertone to it. Nena (remember her?) and Frankie Goes To Hollywood focused a lot on the Cold War and the fear of 'the bomb being dropped'. Even early Wham! dealt with youth dis-enchantment and the dole queue. Stuff today that seems like bumble-gum, not very deep, enterainment, is usally just that.

The Jam's Little Boy Soldiers.....

The first section, below, could have been written for todays Britain

Its funny how you never knew what my name was,
Our only contact was a form for the election.
These days I find that you dont listen,
These days I find that were out of touch,
These days I find that Im too busy,
So why the attention now you want my assistance -
What have you done for me.

Youve gone and got yourself in trouble,
Now you want me to help you out.

These days I find that I cant be bothered,
These days I find that its all too much,
To pick up a gun and shoot a stranger,
But Ive got no choice so here I come - war games.

A bloody excellent song, written by one of the best song writers ever !
!thumbsup!

Very good lyrics there. 'Thats Entertainment' by The Jam is also a great observation on modern life.

Duran Duran were known for some very odd lyrics. There was 'your telephone's been ringing while your dancing in the rain' from "Wild Boys", but the weirdest by them has to be in the song "Of Crime and Passion" which featured on their top selling 'Seven And The Ragged Tiger' album. Get this: 'summer of madness, the end of it all, drag me up an alley for the blossoming fire on a stranger's smile'. The 80's was a weird decade...
