Well i'd suggest "the shield"which could be considered a stable mate to a degree of the sorpranos.

Unlike the the sorpranos didnt become fat and bloated taking a gods age to go no where.

The program features one of (if not the best) anti hero on TV.

The Wire, which the Beeb justified its licence fee with recently.

Brilliant throughout, and series four in particular was outstanding.

Benchmark stuff.

Big up Wayne....You beat me to it.

Season 7 of The Shield has got to be the most powerful ending of a series I have ever seen and being a fan of The Sopranos too i would say as a finale topped that even...Dont try watching season 7without watching the rest of it ifrst though.

The Sopranos is HBO at their best (next to Band Of Brothers of course...Oh and Rome) If Goodfellas was a tv show then this wouldve been it.

Dont get me wrong watched all the Sopranos from when it first aired and think that it is a great show.

But like The Last Word says season 4 will probably change how you look at the world. Seriously.

Dont want to sound like an advert but ?70 for the complete boxset off Amazon is great value.

I noticed the ?70 Sopranos box set offer and am tempted (even more so now, given the positive comments above). From what I've seen of it, I'd echo the comments about The Wire.

I would also add The West Wing into the mix, too - maybe not everyone's cup of tea but it's the best ?50 I've ever spent on DVDs (of the non-gentleman's special interest cinema variety, obviously...).
