You have to remember that for some Henman is a totem for all that is wrong with British tennis, namely its elitism, retrograde patriotism and stifling middle classness. These are points that could also be levelled at Wimbledon itself of course, which has always fancied itself as Royal Ascot in white shorts.

British tennis needs a Wayne Rooney or Rocket Ronnie figure, but I don't suppose it'll get one. Shame, as tennis is really not that expensive a sport to set up and play. Its image is the real problem.

Yeah well said "The Last Word" that was the major problem for me how everybody in the crowd at his matches seemed to speak with a plummy accent and of course it didn't help when his mum & dad were sitting in the crowd trying to look & act like royalty.
Though not sure where you are coming from Speedybert, Tim Henman & Andy Murray were/are playing for themselves and not England/Scotland/Great Britain - do you think that Roger Fedderer is playing for Switzerland for instance?? Why should Andy Murray not be proud to be Scottish you really make it sound like some sort of crime ...

PEOPLE think Stephen Hawking is so clever, but when you ask him a question and he is typing in the answer on his little screen, how do we know he isn't just looking up the answer on the Internet?

Proud to be Scottish, and anti-English are (or should be) two different things. Claiming to support "whoever England are playing" in the 2006 world cup and wearing a Paraguay shirt during the game is going to rub people up the wrong way, especially when he seems to have had no problem taking the money generated by the All ENGLAND club.
We have need of you again, great king.

Well at least he isn't patronising and claiming to support Scotland in the next Tiddleywinks Final as long as England aint in the final.!wink!

I think you will find that when it comes to football rivalry (as you seem to quote that instance with Murray) everything goes out the window. Arsenal Fans (for instance) are not going to support Chelsea if they get to the Champions League Final now are they (they are going to hope they get absolutely humped) ... Celtic fans really came out vocally in their support of Rangers in this years Uefa Cup Final as well. So your argument doesn't cut the mustard I am afraid.

I had to laugh at those deluded, menapausal Dail Mail reading women and male freaks that would flock to Henman Hill to cheer on 'Tiger Tim' thinking he would one day win Wimbledon, especially with legends like Samprass around. And now, poor old Andy Murray is inhereting those same idiots who have'nt learned yet that there are better tennis players around, and none of them are British.

I hope Nadal or Roddick wins it this year and for the ladies,it's got to be Davenport's year.

Though realistically,i can't see Federer being stopped,but here's hoping.

Roddick out in the 2nd round this year, a first. My feeling is that he'll never reach a slam final agin. Interestingly, Tim Henman is still the British Number 7! He's still ranked higher than that lad Chris Eaton, and he hasn't played a competitve match on the tour since the US open last year.

Virginia Wade is still ranked No. 2 British Women's Player with Sue Barker coming up on her inside fast ...

Isn't it amazing how all the mens tennis players always have some stunning model type girlfriend giving them support in the Royal Box whilst the women never have any sign of a better half - surely they can't all be lesbos then.!whistle!
