Check you firewall settings. I had exactly the same problem. My firewall (bullguard) has a 'enable file and printer sharing' option that has to be enabled.
Re: fao lizard and sam
thanx welsh getting a bit jarred with to be honest now
on my desktop which is xp if i go to my network places it then says my network places>entire network>microsft network>workgroup>computer name>printer on computer name
>shared docs on computer name
>scheduled tasks on computer name
>printers & faxes on computer name
so im presuming everything is set up as it should be on xp desktop but cant get any file sharing going on /with laptop which is running vista
do i need to plug laptop in router as well and run another home network set up on laptiop over a wired connection as opposed to running it over a wirelesss one
pretty sure ive done all above anyway but losing track a bit cheers

You need to asign filesharing, go to control panel in vista, the network and sharing, then click on 'show me all the files I an sharing' and make sure file sharing is turned on. also make sure a firewall is not blocking you from doing this, if you use zone alarm, turn it off, it,s shit anyway, allow the filw sharing programme thru the windows firewall under exeptions etc.
OR! Just copy the files on your xp on to a 4gig flash usb drive, and watch them in peace on your laptop.

ok lizard i reckon your right the flash drive, just for you go am i right in thinking ive got a home network ,if i plug 4 seperate pc,s into the 4 ports on my router by ethernet cables 4 rooms in house 1 pc in each room and an ethernet cable going from each room back to wireless modem router and i can acces the internet from every room at same time then my home network is set up correctly
Re: fao lizard and sam
ive got norton internet security 2007 on xp desktop and vista laptop windows firewall disabled on both machines advised by norton programme to use it instead

Yes, thats the idea of a router, you can have one wireless connection or 100, also you can have a hard wired connection via ethernet, and use the other ethernet ports for either computers or games consoles etc.
Put it like this. If you have windows xp on a ordinary PC tower providing you have a wireless card built in you can connect that PC to a wireless router, you cam also connect (hard wire) 3 or four other pc,s into that system using the available ethernet ports.
Then. again-- providing the PC is wireless enabled, you can also have your laptop (providing that is also wireless enabled) search for the PC,s wireless router, once it has found it, you will be asked if you want to join that network, it will then ask you for a wap key, this should be on the base of the router depending on what model, or if it,s an open network ie: unsecured, you can just click on connect.
Then go to your start menu and select documents, look for a sub folder that says Shared, you should be able to acces that folder from the laptop, and vise versa.
hope this helps a bit.
Failing all that, pick the PC tower up and hurl it through the fucking window, then relax.

Having Norton installed on ANY computer is like inviting Harold Shipman round to inspect a wound on your grandmas tummy.

Re: fao lizard and sam
ah we might be getting somewhere lizard the desktop running xp is not wireless it it connected to the router by ethernet cable
the laptop has a wireless card an a network card
i usually connect the laptop to the router wirelessly while the desktop is connected by a cable and both work fine or i have took laptop to near the router and connected it with a cale as well and again both machines work fine
do you think i might need to connect the laptop to the router by wired cable instead of wirelessly and run the network set up from the laptop again over a wired connection?
