I don't even know how the points system works as I've never played before. Is it performance ratings? (I probably should have read up on it before picking my team eh?)

If you click on the "i" at the side of each player, it calls up their profile---and tells you how many points they got last season.

Think I may be altering my strikeforce before the season starts.

Never played before but it was easy to sign up, pick my team and enter the BGAFD league.
