Alice - region 1 dvds only go up to season 2 (last time I looked) because Sony decided the UK market wasn't really that interested. You can pick up the 1st two seasons pretty cheap. hallmark are repeating them at the moment too (I think they are up to ep3 of season 1)
Seasons 3-5 are available on import through amazon if you have a multi- region dvd player. I only had one of the 3 imports stopped at customs. Beg borrow or steal to get hold of them - it just gets better and better. Unlike some of the other great US series of the past decade this one never drops in quality.

Whoops I meant Region 2 (UK) Dvd's only go up to season 2.

Yeah it's out now but you're right it did take forever to come out. Seems strange as the show is so well suited to DVD release. I always want to watch more than one episode. So addictive.
I've heard that the Wire is every bit as good - saw the first two episodes and they were pretty special - have wanted the DVDs ever since but am waiting for the inevitable price drop as a result of HD formats before I go buy 4 series of a show.

Yes, ASDA has series 3 on Region 2 at ?21.99 and season 4 (out on July 2nd) will cost ?24.99.......again, on Region 2

The Shield...One of the most excellentest tv shows I've seen in a looong time. Huge fan. O own series 3,4 and 5 on region ! because they took too long to bring the region 2 versions out.
Series 5 is seriously fucked up...Watch it and we'll talk about this later. Cant wait for season 6. Might even follow this on tv and still buy the dvd box set!

Season six is just unbelievable,it begins just days after the events at the end of season five... i think its ep 5 when Vic catches up with Guido (sp?) and the end of ep 6 just makes yr jaw drop....
