Fudgeflaps, about 3 weeks and 3 chords should suffice to better than Johnny Marr, the Smiths were truly fucking awful. Our Sixth Form was divided between rock fans and the Smiths/ U2 crowd. My mate Ade got most upset when another lad said the Hedge was better than Blackmore!!

Some conversations I could imagine between wannabe guitarists and The Great Guitar Teacher In The Sky (GGT):
Wannabe #1 - "I wanna sound like Robin Trower."
GGT - "First, go out and buy all of Mike Fuller's (Fulltone) effects pedals."
Wannabe #1 - "OK, I did that."
GGT - "Good, you now sound exactly like Trower. Now go and learn how to play the guitar, because you're boring me to death."

Wannabe #2 - "I wanna sound like Ritchie Blackmore."
GGT - "First, learn how to play the guitar."
Wannabe #2 - "OK, I've been playing for five years now."
GGT - "Now get yourself a big old Marshall amp (the correct amp settings are *************) and a Hornby-Skewes Treble Booster (but be sure to ************ first)."
Wannabe #2 - "OK, done that, but I still don't sound like Blackmore."
GGT - "Go and practise some more."
Wannabe #2 - "OK, I've practised another year and I'm starting to sound a bit like Blackmore now."
GGT - "Go and practise some more."
Wannabe #2 - "OK, I've practised another two years and I'm starting to sound more like Blackmore now."
GGT - "Go and practise some more."

I managed about a dozen but was struck by how many ugly bastards are great guitarists (or vice versa)
